Find Ancestors

I cannot from my great great grandfater on the 1861 census. His name was Alfred Stevens born 11 June 1844 in Bix near Henley.

He is on the 1851 census with his parents Aaron and and Lydia and with his wife Sarah on the 1871 census as Stephens.

I cannot see any of the family in 1861, nor trace his parents after that.

Can anyone help, or give me a name to look up to find it?

I wonder if he gave his brothers name????

he is an errand boy here........... i wouldn't have thought he would be too far from the family, it wouldn't make sense especially if William was still at home.

Andrew: Thanks but I don't think that is him. I have a copy of his birth certificate and he was born in Bix near Henley in Oxfordshire, not in Berkshire

Denise: Seen that one too. However Henry and Lydia are aged 40 and 37 respectively but in 1851 Aaron and Lydia were 36 and 35 respectively.

Denise 2: That looks promising, still wonder where his parents are though.

Denise 3: I have seen that marriage entry too. Alfred's birth certificate says fathers name as Aaron Stevens and mother Lydia Stevens (formally Norcott). I know most of the population were illiterate then and Aaron and Abraham are both a bit biblical and the vicar marriying them may have made a mistake and there was no one who could read to correct it.

Thank you all for your help, but I I'm still stumped.

Had a look at the Lydia Stevens death record in March 1905 entry and it is 84 not 64.

I can understand your confusion over the name changes and year of birth and places of birth............ however Lydia is an uncommon name and placing William and George with her in 1861, at the correct ages,would point to it being the same family??

If so he's living 1 door away from Lydia and Henry.


So I wouldn't rule it out as being the wrong family............ names often change as do ages and places of birth.

Lydia seems to be the only one born in Oxfordshire in a space of 30 years........ although I can't say 100% this is the correct family I would thing that it seems like the only possible.

Me again Terence.......... I suppose the only way you may know for sure would be to order Rhoda's birth cert, hopefully it would stae her mothers maiden name as Norcott;
