Searching for Ann Clarke,Hawker from Liverpool

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Owen Report 17 Oct 2009 10:26

This character Ann Clarke appeared along side of my great uncle at the Cheshire Quarter Sessions in 1877 for an offence
committed in Birkenhead during December 1876. Although she
calls herself Ann Nugent,presumably the wife of my great uncle;
Fergus O'Connor Nugent, I'v failed to find a marriage record.
Fergus appears to confound the problem by stating he is married on the 1881 census in the prison records for Chatham
in Kent. The court recognised that Ann Nugent had appeared
in the Sessions as Ann Clarke in 1872 at age 17years, her
occupation ; Hawker. The offence then in Liverpool along with
another male accomplice.
I'v failed to find her origins or where she vanished to after a
spell in Knutsford Jail in 1877.
Love to add the little madam to my family tree !

Thanks Debbie ,Debbie K and Lancashireann for your kind
help. I do have the Liverpool marriage record for Fergus and
Margaret 1896. Ann Clark may have been born in Ireland
and arrived in Liverpool shortly before starting a criminal
career in 1872. My family seemed only to marry, live or even
associate with the Irish for many, many years.
My thanks again ,Owen

Have you managed to find the correct marriage ?

would have thought the names 'Fergus O'Connor' (+surname) was unusual but I found 2 other marriages between 1872 & 1877 alone! Unfortunately neither to an Ann Clarke

Maybe she married in Ireland or just pretended to be married

Point taken

but Fergus O'Connor Nugent did not always use his full name Maybe his Ann Clarke done the same

That is why I put on the end of my reply "But I am not convinced this is your man"

DEB

EDIT

I am aware the wife is not called MARY

Hi Deb,
The marriage of a Fergus Nugent and a Annie Needham has got me thinking. This Liverpool marrriage of 1896 may be a strange coincidence, coming so close to that of Fergus O'Connor Nugent.
Fergus the criminal was a slippery customer but I don't think he would
have risked anothor 7 years prison just as he was getting his life on
track. My father told me of another Fergus whom he saw a few times
in his boyhood. This uncle was his father's brother. A mysterious
seaman who sailed out of Liverpool and Birkenhead between 1890
and 1915 but failed to visit the family home ever again This Fergus
was born circa 1874, Fergus O'connor Nugent in1846.
My thanks Deb,Owen
