Margaret Report 7 Oct 2009 13:13

I cannot locate this family on 1851 census. This is what I have on 1841 Census - living Back Lane, Newcastle on Tyne, William Storey cattle ealer, Mary 45 wife, John 15 son cabinet maker, Mary 15 aur, Magdalene 10 dau and Mark 5 son. Can anyone help? maybe I should be trying an alternative surname but what ?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 7 Oct 2009 13:23

Have you tried just using Sto* as the surname?

Margaret

Margaret Report 7 Oct 2009 13:29

No I havn't actually. I did consider Horey, Torey, Borey etc. but han't thought of your suggestion. I'll have a go. Thanks.

No joy I'm afraid and I also tried *orey with christian name and year of birth (abt 1836) but it said too many results. I'm well and truly stuck !

According to Familysearch Mark was born in Long Horsley, Northumberland. Magdalene in Whalton.

MargaretM Report 7 Oct 2009 14:01

Did Magdalene perhaps marry Charles Maxwell?
1851 census
Queen St., Amble, Northumberland
Charles Maxwell, head, 20, mason & innkeeper, born Fogston
Magdalene, wife, 24, born Whalton
Catherine, dau, 1, born Amble
Margaret Storey, visitor, 14, born Whalton

The visitor Margaret was a daughter of Mark & Catherine. (Not Mag's brother Mark evidently but a relative?)

Thank you everyone - this is all very helpful. Unfortunately the 1841 census only indicates county of birth which is why I id not know where each indiviual was born. All I ha to go on was that they live Newcastle. I shall break for a cup of coffee now and hope to proceed later.
Thank you all for your help.

T in MIddlesex - it's got me scratching my head too !! Perhaps Mark aged 76 is my original William's father ?? Coul both Mark an William be family names carried down through the generations? I'll need to investigate this. Many thanks.

MargaretM Report 7 Oct 2009 18:16

I believe that Mark Story on the 1851 census is 16 not 76. I think the enumerator put a stroke across it making the 1 look like a 7. This 7 is nothing like the 7 in William's age.
I think this could well be your family. William and son William are both born Whalton.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 7 Oct 2009 18:25

I wonder if this might be your William, accounting for his naming his daughter Magdalene after his mother?
