NightingalesLostnFound Report 5 Oct 2009 16:22

I think Im doing really well with my tree, back to 1686, but I dont feel Ive really got there unless I can confirm it all with with documents... I managed to confirm my tree to 1791 using GRO, census, LDS and parish records, some I have got by travelling to the county record offices, others on-line. I now find my family in Hertfordshire, which isnt close enough just to pop into, so where do I go now? Ancestry doesnt seem to have many image records in the 1700's, is there any CD's available with parish records etc that I can use to help confirm my tree back into the mist of time... yer! I know wishful thinking....

Parish Registers
Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies hold parish registers for the whole county from c1558 to the twentieth century
Until civil registration began in 1837, parish registers are the only record of baptisms, marriages and burials throughout the United Kingdom (except for Jews and Quakers). Despite their earlier deficiencies and occasional gaps they form the principal source for genealogical information up to that time.

In Hertfordshire there were 132 ancient parishes, each keeping separate series of registers. In addition to the ancient churches there are many more of modern origin, formed as chapels of ease or district churches within the larger, more populous parishes, and each being licensed to varying degrees to maintain separate series of registers.

Read on to find out more about parish registers, and a list of the registers held at Archives & Local Studies and in libraries. An index to Hertfordshire marriage registers 1538 - 1837 is available through Hertfordshire Names Online. To search Hertfordshire Names Online click on the link on the right hand side.

Thanks Vera for the info, did a quick search on google and found them no problem.

Managed to find quite a few relatives that I had very detail on, on the down side, they charge £7 each for them :(

I'm just going have to find some time to get over there one day, might be able to really push back.

Thanks again Alan

Doesn't look like I'm going to find the time to get to Hertford, Ive still been looking for a CD of parish records, but there isn't any... well, none that I can find anyhow.
Anyone know if there is such a thing?

All the best Alan

S&N genealogy supplies have some parishes in Herts on CD.
Also you could try a Herts family history society if there is such a thing.

There is an online Herts FHS. I joined it several years ago and had some help from a member on there re one of my lines. That could be worth a try. Also, members on there might know what's available on CD.
