Thank you so much Mysteria for taking the time to send me this information. I will double check with his grandson , my uncle by marriage , if either of these scenarios fit with anything he has been told. He only has snippets of childhood family tales from many years ago but something might ring a bell. Your interest and time is much appreciated.
Best wishes Vanessa

Hi Vanessa,

I have found the only W. Jones listed as died aged 35 on 29 Sept 1908 at Kinlet mine on the Forest of Wyre and Clee Hill coalfields.
His occupation was a miner and he died as a result of a roof fall.

There was also the Kemberton Pit Disaster on Dec 4th 1910 whereby 5 men and two boys lost their lives through the breaking of a winding rope and the cage dropped down the shaft.
The only name mentioned is Gough .....and six others (with no names listed).

Although these pits are south of Wrockwardine Wood/St Georges it is possible that your relative moved. My advice is to get the death cert to pinpoint the area he died,it will say the cause of death on there too.

The family could have survived by parish relief. The mining communities usually had a collection for bereaved familes of pit accidents but we have no way of knowing if this occurred and if so how much was collected for the family.

Due to the area that your relation lived in it is more likely that he worked for the Lilleshall company as they had many pits.

This might be a good site to try - they have an address and email contact, and might be able to tell you what happened in these cases:

Have you looked for the family in 1911? Might not directly help with your query but at least would tell you where living and with whom.

Just wondering if anyone can find info on the mining accident my distant relation had sometime between 1905 and 1910. His name was William Jones and he lived/worked around Wrockwardine Wood/St Georges Shropshire.Have tried googling and found quite a good site but his "incident " is not mentioned. He died in the accident and left a young family . Does anyone know if they would have received any help afterwards as I know they stayed with their mom and survived somehow.
Thanks in advance for any help
Vanessa
