Ian,
You would be better served if you deleted your entry and started a completely new thread. That way people will know that it is a different search, not just a continuation from 2009.

I haven't found any Armitts from those two areas, mine seem to be in and around Leek and Stoke-on-Trent areas.

Hi just found this thread but thought you may be able to help me.
I am an Armitt and am searching for a william Armitt who was born about 1816 to about 1867, and married Mary Ann WHALLEY. They had three children (girks) who ended up at the Armitt sisters who started the Armitt Museum. Mary died soon after the girls were born I think.
I don't think they are related to me. At the marriage of William and Mary it gives his father as John. Just want to rule them out of the tree. We have a few John's and a few williams on my branch (my branch started in the Northamptonshire area but the Armitt sisters are from the Salford area.
Any information gratefully accepted

The name is as correct as the interpretation of the hand written form. If he is in prison then the birthplace is quite likely vague or wrong, age out, scrawled writing, etc etc. That was why I was trying to find the prison and slowly work through all inmates.

Thank you all very much for trying I would have thought that his name would have been correct in the 1911 census as he was already somewhere in the system and they got his name correct for the court proceedings.

Pam,

That looks the mostly likely that I have found too so far with regards to age, I have been unable to find out where he was sent which isn't much help.

Patchem,

No they didn't have any children as far as I know, his wife had been married previously and had children from that marriage and no I haven't found but I haven't really looked because I am sure they had nothing to do with my part of the family after what happened and I can't say I blame them.

Did they have any children? And, if so, have you found them in 1911?
Thanks

Will just check what he says but he was born in Hanley and think this is probably where he says, his parents are William c1833, and Ann c1833.

Hi,

I cannot find this William Armitt on the 1911 census, I have tried every possible combination of letters for his surname that I have seen in other censuses, could someone possibly have a look just in case I have missed it.

He was born March 1861 and married 1901, his trial I have now found and got all the gory details for.

I have checked for a death on freebmd pre 1911 just in case he died there are none of the right age.

He spent most of his early life in Staffordshire but I don't know where he would be in 1911 except in some sort of institution, prison or hospital.

I will check back shortly but am just going to go through all the deaths 1/4 by 1/4 to see if I can find a death that fits his so that I can send off for the cert. I have even written to the local prison but did not ever receive a reply.

Many thanks

Sal

Not me but I will check it out in a while. As far as I know both neither party involved came from Ireland both were born in Stoke but I will look at that link and see if there is a connection.

Thanks.

I cannot recall his exact year of birth and there are a few in the area. What I would really like to know is where I can find the outcome of his trial.

The trial took place in early 1910 and he was accused of murdering his wife, I believe the trial took place at the assizes court for Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

I did find mention of his trial in the local paper but as it took place at the same time as a major trial in London they seemed to report on that instead. Any pointers gratefully accepted. Can provide more details if wanted but would have the check through all my stuff..

Many thanks.
