Wayne/Tracey,

Just had another look at the 1851 census. One of the servants to the Jones Household was a Mary Starling (age 57). Very close to your Mary Sterling.

You could be right with your find in the 1861 census for Mary Jones widow.

Regards
Stuart

Thanks to all for the replies.

Birth, Christening and Death info for John Baylis Jones is wonderful.
I wonder what he actually did with a description of "Gentleman" in the census ??

I suppose its too much to ask what his wife's maiden name was ??

Not sure that the Mary Jones that Wayne/Tracey found in the 1861 census is the widow of John Baylis Jones. The initials for the daughter Mary H do not fit with other info that I have.

I have children as a Susan Jones b 1817 Camberwell, d sep 1884, a Mary Knill Jones b 1820, Camberwell and a Samuel Jones b 1816, Camberwell.

My family relationship goes through Susan Jones who married an Alexander Cullen, Whitechapel, vol2, p469, Sep 1842.

I cannot find the source of my info at the moment but will keep looking.

Regards
Stuart

I believe this is your Mary Jones in 1861, she is listed as Widow...

JONES, Mary Head Widow F 68 1793 Annuitant & Fundholder Forston Herefordshire
JONES, Mary H Daughter Unmarried F 41 1820 Land Holder Camberwell Surrey
STERLING, Mary Servant Unmarried F 66 1795 House Servant Herefordshire
CHAPLIN, Elizabeth Servant Unmarried F 34 1827 House Servant Stisted Essex

Registration District:Camberwell Sub District:2 Camberwell EnumerationDistrict: Ecclesiastical Parish:St Giles

Civil Parish:St Giles Camberwell Municipal Borough: Address:Whitbourne Lodge, East Dulwich, St Giles Camberwell County:London, Surrey

So John Baylis Jones died between Apr 1851 and Apr 1861.

(silly me didn't bother checking the death as Stuart couldn't find it, lol, Tania well done!!)

Hi Stuart,

It is quite possible he had died by 1861 remembering he was at least 67 in 1851. It's also possible his rellies just registered his death as John Jones!!

This is his birth & christening...

Birth: 07 FEB 1784
Christening: 07 MAR 1784 Saint Dunstan In The East, London, London, England
Parents:
Father: SAMUEL JONES Family
Mother: SUSANNAH

You mention finding other children via other serach methods, would you mind telling us what they were?

Trying to find info on John Baylis Jones.

He appears in the 1851 census living with wife (Mary) daughter (Mary Knil) and two servants. He is described as "Gentleman".
He was born in St Dunstans in the East abt 1784.

I know he had two more children Susan and Samuel from other research and communications.

He seems to disappear in the 1861 census. I cannot find a death for him either. It should be easy with the extra middle name (Baylis), however if it was shortened to John Jones, then there are thousands of them !!

Any info much appreciated

Regards
Stuart
