Hi All,

Thanks for all the input. It is really good of you to do these searches for me.

I now have a copy of John Baylis Jones' Will, which I am trying to decipher.

The will was proved on 6th January 1858, so pretty quick after his death in Dec 1857 !!

He appoints his wife Mary Jones (still no maiden name) and son in law Thomas (and what looks like) Roid.

He leaves money to his daughters Susannah, and Mary Knill., and to the widow of his late son Samuel Jones, who is also called Susanna.

I am now thinking that the relation I have in my tree as Susan Jones is actually the daughter in law of John Baylis Jones and Mary Jones.

I have her marrying an Alexander Cullen (Sep 1842, Whitechapel vol 2, page 469). I guess if I got the marriage cert it should say if she was widowed or not when she got married, and also what age she was.

It is getting quite fascinating now !!
Lots more to research and dig out. Who said it was easy !!

Regards
Stuart

Gee Report 20 Sep 2009 11:45

There is this which is a bit off the wall. If Mary had 'dosh' is it possible that John 'Baylis' took her name??

The date is late too, after the children, but it might be worth a thought

Ok this is the marriage of the parents of John Baylis Jones...

SAMUEL JONES
Spouse: SUSANNAH BAYLIS
Marriage: 30 DEC 1781 Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London, England

John has a sibling too, Ceclia Jones Baptised in 1782.

I need to see if Henry Baylis Jones is a Granchild or even GGrandchild of the above couple.... it doesn't give you Mary maiden name, but fills your tree in a little more!

It's starting to irk at me now lol

Right now i think there is most def a link between Henry Baylis JOnes and John Baylis Jones.... It's just finding it!!

John was baptised @ St Dunstan in 1784 and Henry @ St Dunstan in 1840.

Same name arrangement and same Baptism location??

Going to see what i can dig up!

Hi Ann,

Thanks. The will was there and I have downloaded.

Next chore is to read it. Eight pages of Victorian solicitors handwriting !!

I think it will take a month to get into readable form and understand all the terms and conditions

Thanks
Stuart

Yes I saw that as well, if you go directly to document on line and search "John Baylis Jones" it wont throw up millions of records, I applied for a donloaded will a few months ago and the quality was brilliant and quick as well.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the info.

I will check out and see what turns up.

I have also searched Google and there looks to be some sort of insurance paperwork from The Sun Fire Office held at the Guild Hall library ( closed for renovation at present, what luck !!)

Stuart

Hi Tracey,

Yeah! the info is never quite as accurate as you would like.

Just looked at Free BMD and there is a Henry Baylis Jones born Dec 1840, Stepney vol 2, page 435. There is a marriage for him Sep 1865. Mile End vol 1c, page 117. Amy Maria Cott appears on the same page, so looks like there is some correlation.

Any luck with John Baylis Jones' wifes maiden name ??

Regards
Stuart

LOL

Thats the quality of Ancestry!!!

I think the transcriber has been confused by the full age thing, so he was over 21.

Hi Tracey,

Thanks for the info.

Looks a problem with the date of Birth and date of Marriage. - both are 1865 in your message

Slightly sideways...

But a relative maybe??

Name: Henry Baylis Jones
Age: Full Age
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Spouse Name: Amy Maria Cott
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 1 Jul 1865
Parish: Saint Thomas, Stepney
County: Middlesex
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: John Jones
Spouse Father Name: George Nathaniel Cott

My money would be on her surname being Knill... as given to the daughter of the same name.

Hi Stuart

Try not to read too much into initials etc, the H could well be a K on the image or looks like a H but is actually a K.

Same as the Starling/Sterling similarity.

I'll take a look and see what i can find out about the marriage
