I've been trying to find my Grandfather John Turner for some time. I hired aa 'expert' on Ancestry. com. She was very good but could not unearth him in England. She suggessted I go back to the Australian records and find out as much as I can here in Australia first on John than flip back to England. John Turner married Elizabeth May True about 1928. In Sandy Falls NSW.
So I am going to order all the children's birth certificates, could someone look up the Vol and page numbers please for Una Evelyn Turner 1929. Dorothy Turner 1930 Pamela Turner 1933 Shirley Turner 1936 Erla Turner 1937 Margaret Turner 1939. aNY INFO MUCH APPRECIATED

Because NSW births finish at 1908 on the net, you're best bet would be to order the marriage cert which are gnerally fantastic in nsw and give parents names/occupations/birth places of brides and grooms etc:

Registration Number Groom's Surname Groom's Given Name(s) Bride's Last Name
at Time of Marriage Bride's Given Name(s) District * Purchase Certificate
18762/1928 TURNER JOHN TRUE ELIZABETH M GUNDAGAI

......NSW/BDM also shows marriages of the daughters -in particular:- 1950 Una Evelyn Turner m Laurence Henry Beaver (he died Reg.No 21448/1974). (no death record for Una Beaver) ....... You may find Una on the electoral roll (NSW State Library has an 'Ask a Librarian' service (on-line) -they will check electoral rolls for you.) ....In case it helps there's a Jessie True also from Gundagai -m 1927 Henry J Chilton -she d1935 her parents Thomas P & Fanny E G True. .... There's 'Joy Murrin's Transcription Service' -to seach cert/s. for abt $15 (i.e. Laurence Beaver) to find their off-spring. ....Valerie (WAus)

This may be his wife's death?

Reg/Year 10582/1960
Surname TURNER
Gvn names ELIZABETH MAY
Father ERNEST JAMES
Mother NELLIE MURIEL
Place SYDNEY

Una's husband's death is on www.ryersonindex.org

You can request a lookup from the site of his death notice which may list children's names. From wwww.bdm.nsw.gov.au, his parents were Benjamin & Isabel (nee Firmstone). Also looks ike Una was his 2nd wife - possible first wife: Evelyn Maude SMITH in 1942 (remarriage as BEAVER in 1958).

BEAVER Laurence Death notice 03DEC1974 Death 63 late of Dundas

Hope this helps

Thankyou to the kind people who looked up the info for me, sorry I took too long to reply. I went to the doctors for a painful rash on my face and it turns out it is shingles. Now wonder it's sore.
Back to John Turner, in spite of this painful process and to the annoyance of a few who took the time to do look ups in the past for John and his parents Harriet Barry and George Turner I will keep looking.
I sent all the relevant searches from genesreunited to my 'expert' I hired on 'ancestry.com.' after following all leads she said in her report they where all 'brick walls and some things remain brick walls'.
I joined genesreunited to find my grandfather so I'm sorry I'll keep posting and following up leads untill I find John, George and Harriet and be a pain in the backside.
I'll go to purgatory for it untill I find him.
Interesting the post from Cherylin Laurence Beaver is my Dad and I never knew his first wife's name so thank you. I'm off to the doc's again be back in a while.

Do you have the death certificate of your grandfather, if not I suggest that you get it, any ideas when / where he died?

it should have the following info on

place of birth
period of residence in Australia
his parents names
marriage details
childrens names
age when married

Sorry to hear about your shingles it is very painful, but we don't want you to get any other pains. If you do have any certs for john it would be best to give us all you have, especially the marriage cert, as I say nsw are fantastic.

Yes I have John's death certificate he died in Harden NSW 1945 registration number 18651. Says Harriet Barry and George Turner for his parents.
Also 35 years in NSW, born in Manchester.
Victoria, not sure if that could be his service record as he died in 1945?
Marriage certificate gives the same names for his parents, married to Elizabeth in 1928 says he was 47. Not sure if Harriet had any other names, John was suppose to be born in 1881

Linda

Linda Report 15 Sep 2009 06:50

was john an only child do you know? There is nothing coming up on the census with the correct parents, if he came out to aus by himself, then he's one of thousands of john turners in immigration and emigration records, and there doesn't appear to be a george and harriet on any census, that I can find? Perhaps they were irish?

This is the only birth that might fit coming up on family search. There's something amiss here, it shouldn't be this hard!! Does the marriage cert give george or johns occupation?

No John supposely had sisters. His father George was a bricklayer. I was told that their was irish blood so it could be Harriet as Barry sounds Irish but the 'EXPERT' checked all that avenue, came up with a Berry?
I am sure he emigrated on his own. He had a wife who died in childbirth her name was suppost to be Annie, The child lived and lived with Annie's parents was suppose to be called Catherine. John sent money back from Australia for the child. This was about 1907, I think he came to Australia between 1907-1910. Went to Tasmania first.

Linda

Linda Report 16 Sep 2009 00:20

can you let us have the sisters names and approx dates of birth if you know them? Or even if they were older or younger? A thorough search of the 1881/91 census gives us no john with mother harriet, plenty of georges and other names but no bricklayers. It may be that harriet died between 81/91, so a list of the sisters names may be able to hlep sniff out george and john.

Also the details of the first wife and child if you know them, presumably they married sometime between 1891 and john leaving. Unfotunately he would hae had to go to mainland aus before heading to tas.

Sorry do not have John's sisters names he never told his 6 daughters here in Australia and he died when they where very young.
His first wife died about 1907 in childbirth so they may of married around the same time too, her name was Annie and the chils Catherine.
I really wish I knew more to find the old buggar, it is a mystery how there are no Harriet Barrys and George Turners marriage records.

Linda

Linda Report 16 Sep 2009 00:51

Yep, I'm sorry but there is nothing coming up, not even on the irish site. On johns marriage cert did it say his father was deceased? Sometimes that can be used if his father was unknown?? This is so frustrating!! Regards Linda :)

No mention of George being deseaced.
Looked at that Harriet in the past and one of the things I passed onto the 'expert'. That peticuliar James was a policeman I don'rt know what info she came up with tracing that family.

I deleted the last post as I put it on twice.
Thankyou to all who tried to help again, it's a hard one. I'll order all John's daughters birth certificates here in Australia and see if there is any additional information. .
One I have , Una Evelyn Turner 1929, at Gundagai NSW, it gives John's birthplace as Yorkshire. But the marriage and death certificate says Manchester. John worked on the NSW railways but I drew a black there too.
So thanks again.
