this is the only one shown as Houghton Regis ..... which is not absolute proof of cousse, as he might have been taken to a nearby village where, for example, his mother had lived before marriage.

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Sep 2009 21:13

The one I am looking at has Hannah Lines age 30, Straw Platter (or Hatter), plus 4 children, then a double line, James Smith, double line, and then George and Ann White

Could there be TWO James Smiths born Houghton Regis???

And of course, the age is out on the 1841 by upto 4 years, downwards.

Ann

1841 census

Name: James Smith
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1811
Gender: Male

Civil parish: Houghton Regis
Hundred: Manshead
County/Island: Bedfordshire
Country: England

Registration district: Luton
Sub-registration district: Dunstable

James Smith 30

James is living by himslef ................. in an area known as Chalk Hill

If you notice, every separate household after the first one on the page has "do" written in the column for address.

Usually households on the 1841 are separated by a double line, and separate families living separately in the same house are separated by a single line. This enumerator doesn't always seem to have followed that "rule"! BUT there is a double line before James' name, and after his name.

He is living in Church Street....he is living with others although it doesn't state this on the 1841 it is possible they were all lodgers.
