If you find anything about Greenwich pensioners, let me know!

Someone here in some thread somewhere a while back gave directions to info about Chelsea Pensioners and I have a notion I may have found my grx3 grfather in a list, and I failed to save what I found and have completely forgotten how to find it ...

Hello you lot!! Done the shopping so back on board!! So, I think I'm gonna run with the Danes ie william and anna(bella) and see what I can dig up. Still planning on the UK trip in Oct so hope I can find something then? Robert is I think a Greenwich pensioner, know where I can check that one?

And then there's spelling drift.

There are loads of DANEs born in Maidstone, in the censuses.

For instance, in 1841:

William Dane 65 [1776]
Anna Dane 51 [1790]
(Annabella in 1851 and in submitted birth records in the IGI)
John Dane 20
Martha Dane 18
Isaac Dane 16
Elizabeth Dane 13


and an assortment of probable relations of theirs, in 1851.


William and Anna(bella) might be candidates for parenthood of Eliza.

I've been poking about on google to see if I can find any more Parish Record sites.

A helpful Mormon has of course submitted her to the IGI as born abt 1811 in Maidstone ...

The censuses have no Dain-s in or born in Maidstone in 1841 or 1851.

However - there are some in Ashford, which isn't a million miles off.

Well, 1861 seems to say Maidstone, according to Ancestry. And the image. ;)

They're in Greenwich St Alphage, and he's a mariner.

Ditto 1841 and 1851, in Greenwich, but he's a fisherman.

We're not a very helpful bunch, are we??

The aim of the OPC (OnLine Parish Clerks) sites is to get all parish records onto the web ........ I haven't looked carefully at this one. I know the Lancashire site is very good.

There is a somewhat snooty remark on the main OPC site (www.onlineparishclerks.org.uk/) that Kent is now asking for "donations, which is contrary to the original concept of Online Parish Clerks."

Eliza Dain is on one Private Member tree on ancestry ..... you have to send a pm to the owner of the tree to get any information

Checked that image for you and I wouldn't go with the Mormons'/Ancestry's version. ;)

I'd say it says MAIDSTON, at least. ;)

There's a squiggle in front of "Pensioner". It could possibly be read as Grch. Was he a Greenwich (or Chelsea) Pensioner? Not much relevant, I imagine. ;)

Eliza dain married Robert George Pegg in 1831 Charlton Kent. Cannot find any ref to her birth or parents? According to the census she was born in maidstone kent c 1811. Thanks for any help Linda :)

Off to do some shopping etc, so don't be annoyed if I don't read any replies for about an hour!!
