Ah don't worry about the learning curve. Us lot will eddicate you real good. Just read the posts, sift through the info, match it to what you already have and you will get there. Don't forget you may argue with us. Sometimes the info given just does not fit, and sometimes you are looking at things from a different perspective.

thanks everyone.

I did not realise the puzzle issue, or the fact that Grace is interchangable in Scotland...

It's a real bonus, thank you so much....

You need to get certificates. Probably birth for Alexander to find out if you have his parents correct and then as I said marriage for him and emily.

With such common names it is easy to choose incorrectly when looking at so many options.

You need to start with an absolute proved fact. Something which you have documented/certificated officially and work back from there. You might have a certificate for one of Alexander's children which gives his name and place of birth. So you find the next certificate that proves who Alexander's parents were, or his marriage and put the pieces of the jigsaw together.

Hope that lot is understandable. In summary, you need to prove what you have found.

Charlotte, What I have given you with the Sophia, George Emily Alexander is the marriages information. Marriages at certain times were recorded between four to six on a page. It is like a puzzle and you have to know which couple actually married, or find that out by searching for children of the marriage.

In this case there is no argument because you know that Emily married Alexander. You can disregard the other two names entirely.

If you would like to buy their marriage certificate, which may give you additional family information, go to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

This is the cheapest way to buy certificates.

Charlotte Report 6 Sep 2009 12:57

in the 1901 census alexander robertson 46 says born isle of burray, orkney. do you think this coulod be wrong and he could be the person above registered in glamorgan? i am a bit confused byt this branch of my tree...

Charlotte

Charlotte Report 6 Sep 2009 12:53

that has to be them !!! so, sorry not good at this, but is sophia and george visitors if this is a census?

they def had a few children, harriet, is my great grandmother who i knew as she died well into her 90's. She actually outlived her son, my grandfather.
Just alexander is as far as i could get without getting stuck. think his father is John born 1811 but know nothing of emily's folks.

Thanks so much you have been great, and clearly much better at searching than me :-) so BIG thanks x

emily love seems to have been born Wales Cardiff Glem.
Wonder how they ended up meeting then? thinking alexander must have moved to wales as other children born in wales from the marriage.

Hi Charlotte, Sorry I should have put in the source of the information. That was very remiss of me. Here is the web address. It is from the LDS Family History Search IGI thingy. It's free which is a bonus. You may have more luck knowing the geographical area. I struggled with working out which records matched your information. Had to use Google maps in the end. And no I'm not related, just helping.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

Good luck.

PS Must admit I had no luck with Emily. There are lots of possibilities but need to know where she was born.
