Can anyone help?

I am trying to seek information concerning my Grandfather from my Fathers side.

I know very little about him and do not know of anyone that I can ask to get the full picture, however this is what I know about him.
Full name as I am led to believe is George Smith, Birth (approx) 1896 - 98. Place of birth unknown.

He apparently joined the army quite young around 17 so he was under the legal age when he joined around 1914-15, the date period is a complete guess based on what I have heard and pieced together and then went on to in the WWI, which regiment I do not know however at some point he was wounded during his service by a hand-grenade explosion.

I don't have as yet any photos of George in uniform

He came back to England and on the 24/10/1920 he married my Grandmother Emily Slater at the Holy Trinity Church West Bromwich.

On George and Emily’s marriage cert and its states that his father was Thomas Smith but he was deceased at the time. Marriage cert also states that George was 22 and Emily 19 at the time in 1920.
Additionally at the time of marriage George was registered at the Slater family home 15, Boulton Road Handsworth. Witnesses at the wedding where Joseph Dixon and Also Eliza Willetts, Joseph Dixon was in fact a Slater and went by the name of Dixon, it a long story so will not go into that.

There is also a rumour that George came from London, where in London I don't know, that's been my stumbling point.

George and Emily went onto to have three children, Doris (B) Approx 1922, Vera (B) 1925, Georgina (B) 1927 Denis George (B) 1934 (My Father).
The only other information on occupation’s is that in 1920 he is listed as an upholster on his marriage cert and some time in WWII he was an Air Raid Warden (again another hearsay story) then the next reference actual reference I have is that he did have a job at Prestwood sanatorium as a ‘Night Porter’ between 1957 (maybe before this, I say this as this is on my mother and fathers marriage cert) – 1965, I know for certain that he did not work after the end of the year as he died at the end of December of this year, as the records show 03/01/66 is his burial date so and the BMD index shows the following,

Dec qtr 1965
SMITH George
Rowley Regis
Registers at Stourbridge Register Office
ROW/12C/98

I don’t have the Death Cert as there is nothing worth gleaning from it that I do not already know.

Another story that has come to mind is that George’s family were involved in the stage down in London, don't know how true this is, but because of this lifestyle is one of the main reasons he joined the army and moved to the midlands and never had contact with his family again. That so the story goes.

And another story that an uncle George (Brother of Thomas) came to visit George (Granddad) in the Midlands when he found out where he was, to try and persuade him to get back in contact with his side of the family, but he never did.

I think my original question was wrong, you see with two common names like George and Thomas, also not knowing for certain when George was actually born and also where he was born for definite, I have hit a bit of a "Brick Wall".

Once I have George's birth date and location of birth then I can progress a little further with my quest, but as up to now I have come unstuck. As far as I can see without those two key items I can progress no further, so I am looking for ideas and suggestions.

Hi Pacman,

Well we can try and help you all we can...

You mentioned he served in WW1, do you have access to Ancestry? If you don't it might be worth you taking out a free 14 day trial and going through the WW1 army records to see if you can find him?

It could be a long search, but a good one if you can indeed find him, this will give you another address (hopefully his home addy) and also mention next of kin (hopefully)

Pacman

If, and thats a big if, thats your, family on the 1901 census then this is your family too as they are the only one coming up in the 1911 census

Which would mean that Thomas died after the 1911 census and before the 1920 marriage.
