I have looked on the website and to order the cert you need to have the exact dob, and from the info I have I can only trace it to June and not a date in June... any ideas?

Hi
I looked at the 1911 census and it says that Richard and Fanny had been married 17 and had had 3 live births and and 3 children were still alive.

Marriages Mar 1894
Butler Fanny Forden 11b 233
Gethin Richard Forden 11b 233

Richard H's birth
Births Dec 1899
Gethin Richard Herbert Forden 11b 165

so William and Thomas could have been their's.

What was your William John's surname at birth.

Go to the GRO website - just google it. You can order certs online for £7. . You need all the info above plus a credit/visa card or the like. Take your time and fill in everything precisely.
Any probs let us know - and would love to know how you get on!

Oh dear - we didn't do the obvious:

Births Jun 1906 (>99%)
Gethin William John Forden 11b 157

Either the family info is wrong or he was a Gethin relative.

Just in case there is a family link with the Gethins - just keep in mind:

Marriages Mar 1894 (>99%)
Butler Fanny Forden 11b 233
Gethin Richard Forden 11b 233

It might be worth buying some credits to see the original - it might just have a more precise birthplace.

Here is the family 1911. Is your grandfather one of them?

GETHIN FANNY F 1870 41 Forden Montgomeryshire
GETHIN RICHARD M 1870 41 Forden
GETHIN RICHARD HERBERT M 1900 11 Forden
GETHIN THOMAS TUDOR M 1910 1 Forden Montgomeryshire
GETHIN WILLIAM JOHN M 1906 5 Forden Montgomeryshire

You can search with forenames only but success of course depend on those names!

How do you go about getting a copy of the birth certificate, I dont know the exact date of birth only june 1906, and if this says his parents are unknown, is there any other way of finding out? I have asked living relatives but all they know is that the gethin family took him in.

Samantha Report 21 Aug 2009 16:58

I have discovered that my great grand father (born 1906) was taken in as a child by Richard and Fanny Gethin so is not a true Gethin. This means that the true blood line of my mothers side of the family is a mystery. Can anyone let me know how I go about tracing his true parents... or are we to be ever wondering where the four generations known as Gethin's - but are not- really come from? any ideas anyone????
