I've just started out on Genes Reunited, I'm trying to find Relatives of my Nan-Nan who was Christened Lillian Thompson in Sheffield. She married my Grand-dad Charlie Marples. I know Some where in the family there was a Derek Thompson who was a police officer in Sheffield. I know that she lost her father & 2 brothers in the first world war all were in the Navy she has told me. I know that they lived in Shalesmoor area of Sheffield, Also I know she had a sister called Annie who married Henry Gray known down the pit as Harry. They had children, Johnny & Susan were 2 of these. I know that Johnny had trials for Sheffield United & actually played a couple of games in the 60's. She had two brothers living with her mother in the 40's & 50's called Frank & Walter, I know one worked in the steel industry.

Hi Jason

So, your great gran married Charlie Marples in the December quarter of 1940 in Sheffield. That would make her born in the late 1910's???

Hi Jason

You may need to consider buying the marriage certificate for Lilian and Charlie in order to get the names of their fathers and their occupations. This will make it much easier to trace them back in the census.

Unless you already know Lilian's father's name??

This is the information for their marriage

England & Wales, Marriage Index: 1916-2005
about Charlie Marples
Name: Charlie Marples
Spouse Surname: Thompson
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1940
Registration district: Sheffield
Registration county (inferred): Yorkshire - West Riding
Volume Number: 9c
Page Number: 1686

The cheapest way to get the certificate is directly from the GRO

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

If you tick the box that asks if the GRO reference is known and enter the information above

ie - year 1940, quarter December, registration district Sheffield, volume no 9c, page no 1686, name Charlie Marples.

If you've got any more info about the family that might help us get back to 1911 at least then that would be great.

You could also try putting some of the names into the Search Trees facility above and see if there are any matches in any other trees. If there are you could always send a private message to the owner and ask them if they could help with any more information.
