My 2G Grandfather was James Metcalf c1842. James married Alice Dembry in 1864. The family lived in Sunderland and I know from their marriage certificate that James' father was William Metcalf, but I have no other information on William Metcalf.

Does anyone know anything about William Metcalf c1820? Who he married and when. Where he was born and when he died
Thanks Maxine

Someone is doing Metcalf as a One Name Study so worth checking the Guild of One Name Studies which will give you her contact details.

There is also this:

Website: www.metcalfe.org.uk

You might find some info on there.

William Metcalf c1820 was a mariner. That is all the infromation available on his son's marriage certificate. I cannot get a birth cert or a marriage cert because I dont have enough information.

His son James Metcalf 1842 was a Shipwright.

William Metcalf was not shown as deceased on James Metcalf's marriage cert.

I will have a look at www.metcalf.org.uk - see if that turns up anything.

There is a marriage for William Metcalf and Catherine Thompson - but I have nothing to support this information.

Hi June

Yes this is the family - I have this information.

James Metcalf died in 1869 aged 29 years, and Alice (Dembry) was widowed as shown in 1871.

The children are Thomas Demrby, James Dembry Metcalf and Catherine Metcalf.

Hi Jill

No I cant find the metcalf's in 1851 census - I suspect William was at sea and I cannot establish who he married.

Hmm thats interesting. Been on www.metcalfe.org and it would seem the metcalfs originated in North Yorkshire. I always thought they came from Scotland - although I have no idea why I though that.

Brilliant.

Had a look at 1861 census and can also find William Metcalf married to Ann with kids John, Frances, William etc but no sign of James.

Perhaps I will try to get a birth cert for James Metcalf - although there are 2 probably entries - it will probably be worth it just to find out for certain who his parents were. Never realised Metcalf was such a common name - and to think I was the only Metcalf in my school!!

Hi June

Yeah - I was just checking in 1861 for James when I found another William. There is no sign of James Metcalf in 1861 - the only reference is a James T metcalf - which I know is wrong. Thats why I think I need to establish the name of James's mother (William's wife).

Then I may be able to find her in 1861 census and establish if there are any other siblings. Maxine
