Her mother was Rachel Mahala Strutt, the daughter of Robert Samuel Strutt (born 1827 Manningtree, Essex) and his wife Lucy (Pear b1822, Brantham, Suffolk). Rachel Mahala was born in Islington in 1857.

Robert went off to sea at the age of 17 and his family heard no more of him. He appears in no censuses after 1841, which makes him very difficult to trace. I have had to work backwards from (a) his death (see below) and (b) his application for a Mate's Certificate.

If I'm right (and I'm fairly certain that I am), he had a second family in Cardiff in the 1870s. He and his 'wife' (I can't trace any actual marriage) Martha had a son called George and a daughter who was also called Mahala. Mahala was Robert's mother's name.

Robert died on 6/7 October 1880 when the ship on which he was second mate, the SS Somorrostro, went down with all hands in the Bay of Biscay on the way back to Cardiff from Bilbao.

Sometimes it's best to leave off the surname..in this case i would have only put in Mums name as is it unusual
