Hmmm, well the baptism makes it look as though Mary was daughter of Ellen McCarty and Timothy Kane but now that gives us two conflicting 1871 census records - One in Cardiff with Mary as born in 1853 and mother Ellen, Irish born and one in Swansea with Ellen and Timothy but no Mary!

The Swansea one also has the wrong age for Ellen by a mile, going by the later records I have. Her age has varied a fair bit, but the Swansea record is 20 years out. I have looked at the image and it does appear to have them both as 67, but if they are the parents of that Mary and John from the baptism records, surely they wouldn't have both been in their late 50s when they were born, so it may have been an error, each being around 47 makes more sense to me.

Still no sign in 1861 census >.<

Ah well, at least I can rule it out. Those Michael and John deaths in Cardiff are interesting, although she had sons called Michael and John, so no help there! Unless anyone can come up trumps with a 1861 census hit my friend will have to fork out for Mary's birth cert if she wants to know more

I think this could be Ellen's son John's birth registration

Births Sep 1860
KANK John Cardiff 11a 212

On the actual register the surname is 'Kane' it has been mistranscribed.

Getting a copy of the certificate would give parents names

Hmmm...that's possible! I had been imagining Ellen having married in Ireland, but no reason why she may not have married in Wales shortly after coming over. The dates fit, Ellen has children in 1853, 1858 and 1861

Yes, that's probably them, oh how annoying!! Still, it potentially narrows down death date of Ellen's husband to 1852-1871, lol.

Hi all,

Doing some research for a friend and found out she is descended from Irish immigrants who came to Wales. I have found some good records, but have hit a bit of a wall trying to find someone, and from experience I know more pairs of eyes can be a great help, so if anyone is at a loose end, please help me search!

I have Mary Ann Kane, born in Cardiff in 1853, birth record found on FreeBMD and also confirmed in 1881,91 and 1901 census returns where she is widowed as Mary O'Neil and living with her children and her mother Ellen who was born in Cork, Ireland.

Ellen is widowed by 1881, and what I have been trying to find is earlier census records in the hopes I can find the name of Ellen's husband but I am drawing blanks pre-1881, but they must be around somewhere as Mary was born in Wales, as previously mentioned.

In addition, I am trying to find Mary's husband, I THINK I found the marriage record which in 1872 in Pontypool to Edward *Neal* - this is the closest match. Edward presumably died somewhere between here and 1881 but I am trying different surname variations without much success. It may be that this isnt the right marriage but I can't see any others.

Any insights appreciated :)
