St Cuthberts church is the huge church at the west end of Princes Street in Edinburgh, the district of Leith is the docks area of Edinburgh and Leith Street (and Leith Street Lane) run from the east end of Princes Street down Leith Walk to the port of Leith. Sandport Street is also in Leith It is my city so any questions feel free to ask. If you need any clarification on Scottish records let me know and I'll check when I am back at work on Monday

Tom

Just for interests sake if you go to this link it will take you to a picture of Leith Street c 1900 showing the Terrace on the left.

Helen, I saw those names on the 1941 cencus, as the names below them were the names I was looking for, but looking more closely they may be the same family. Will check.thanks.

If this census information were proved to be James parents, this looks likely to be the marriage for Alexander and Isabella.

Alexander Boyn
Isabella Anderson

8th October 1813
North Leith, Midlothian

Helen Report 17 Jul 2009 21:24

Carol,

According to the census, James says he was born in Leith, Edinburgh.

Found this 1841 census for possible parents to James.

1841 Scotland Census
about Alexander Boyne
Name: Alexander Boyne
Age: 60
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1781
Gender: Male
Where born: Scotland

Civil parish: North Leith
County: Midlothian
Address: Sandport St
Occupation: Mason J
Parish Number: 692/1
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Alexander Boyne 60
Isabella Boyne 50
Elizabeth Boyne 20
William Boyne 15
Alexander Boyne 10
George Boyne 8
Margaret Boyne 6
John Anderson 25
John Shaw 50
John Shaw 14

Note the fathers name ... Alexander. As James and Mary's first son was called Alexander, this might be a clue that the families were connected. The Scottish naming pattern usually indicated the first born son is named after the paternal grandparent.

The other interesting thing about this census is the address - Sandport St. On James and Mary's 1841 record, you can see they were also living at this address. Maybe another clue.

Hi Helen, thankyou once again for the information, I will try and trace where James was born, and maybe then I will no who his parents were and where he came from. I have tried Scotlands People, but nothing.

Carol,

Are you saying 9 Leith St Terrace is mentioned on the marriage record for James and Mary (from the Old Parish Record)

And yes, Leith St Terrace would have been in Edinburgh.

Helen Report 17 Jul 2009 20:31

Carol,

This looks like the 1841 census for Mary's parents in Linlithgow. As you can see, her father's occupation is a slater (as mentioned on Mary's marriage record)

1841 Scotland Census
about William Auld
Name: William Auld
Age: 47
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1794
Gender: Male
Where born: West Lothian, Scotland

Civil parish: Linlithgow
County: West Lothian
Address: High Street
Occupation: Slater
Parish Number: 668
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
William Auld 47
Mary Auld 41
Agnes Auld 24
Alexander Auld 19
Elizabeth Auld 9

Linlithgow is in West Lothian ... as opposed to Edinburgh in Midlothian

Carol Report 17 Jul 2009 20:20

Hi Helen, James occupation at the time of marraige was a Hatter, which does fit into the family tree, as this seems to have been the trade of 1 or 2 of the Boyne's.

Carol Report 17 Jul 2009 20:07

Hi Helen, I am fairley happy with the marraige of Mary and James, it was something my daughter said about the Linthigow and Edinburgh back then maybe Linthigow came under Edinburgh, something I will try and find out. About the marraige certificate all it say's is that Mary Auld residing at in the parish of linthigow, Daughter of William Auld . Slater in Linlithgow. That is all the information it gives. I can't seem to find anything about James Boyne, the address on the Marraige certificate is (what it looks like) 29 Leith Street Terrace, so is this Edinburgh I don't no.

Carol,

Have you downloaded the marriage record for James and Mary and are you satisfied they belong to your family.

I realise the death details for Mary may not tell you much but have you also looked at them.

Hi Carol,

I’ve checked again on the IGI and also Scotlandspeople Old Parish Records for the marriage of James and Mary and only one result comes up on both.

Same info as before: Married 5th June 1840 in St Cuthbert’s Edinburgh.

Where did you get your information on them being married in Linlithgow ?

What information did you get from Mary’s death. There is a death for Mary Auld / Boyne on Scotlandspeople:

Old Parish Register Deaths and Burials.

Mary Auld / Boyne (cross-ref two names)
1851
County: Midlothian
District: St Cuthbert’s

Is this the one you found ?

Hi Helen, thought I would let you no that I have read through all the information you sent to me, and everything seems to tie in except for Mary and James, their marraige date seems correct time and date except for the church, but maybe that came under Edinburgh back then, not sure, also the death certificate is wrong for Mary so have to start again, and look into that one, can't seem to find anything on James or Mary's Death.
Thank's again for you're help.
Carol.

Carol Report 16 Jul 2009 22:18

Hi Helen, The marraige I have is that of james and mary at linlithgow on the 5th June 1840, and the death cert I have for Mary is 14th May 1851 from Scotlands People, I will be looking into that tomorrow, and hopefully get some answers.

Hi Carol,

Did you say you found a death for Mary Auld ?

What year was it.

I had a look on Scotlandspeople and can't see it. Checked using the x-ref for maiden and married names Auld and Boyne.

Also according to the IGI, Mary and James were married in Edinburgh on the 5th June 1840. Is that the one you've found. It's just that you mentioned they were married in Linlithgow.

Found a possible birth for Mary Auld.

Mary Auld
3rd March 1816 at Linlithgow, West Lothian

Father: William Auld
Mother: Marion Wright

William Wright Boyne may have got his middle name from Mary's mother.

Carol Report 16 Jul 2009 20:55
