Friends, the Ludlow family appears not to be - they ARE called Sudlow. Now that you have found me the family in 1841, I can follow through the parents and other siblings - all Sudlows.

Thanks, now found Martha in 1841 and 1851. Don't know what happened to me with 1841, sure I tried Sudlow - am beginning to think that is what they were called!

In my haste, now realise that Obranor Hansom is possibly unrelated.

Wonder why they dropped the Pickup name?

Martha's listed in 1851. Just look for Martha's born c1837 in Manchester.

I now have a problem with the Ludlow (Sudlow) family you found in Stockton in 1891 with Annie Pickup (niece of William).

William Hanson Pickup b 1834 in Rochdale, Lancs, married Martha Ludlow in Dec 1854 in Rochdale. She was born c 1836. In 1861 and 1871 she says she is born Manchester, but her brother William in 1891 says he was born Wrenbury, Cheshire. I can't find either William or Martha in 1841 or 1851, either in Lancashire or Cheshire, or indeed anywhere else. I've tried alternative spellings and wildcards, to no avail. I've found a bundle of Ludlows born Manchester after 1837 who could be siblings but can't find any of them either.

I realise another certificate is needed for the marriage of Martha to Wm Pickup to prove her father, but if you sleuths can spend just a short time having a look, I'd be grateful.

I found them by looking for William by first name only, dob and place of birth because he was so consistent with that. Having Walter with him, being in Leicester and being a joiner all fitted.

Sorry, had to have a day off yesterday, clearing out my flat ready for sale.

Now had time to digest all your suggestions and think they are right. Obranor Hanson in 1901 is clearly not Walter, but I'll worry about him later.

Also found a (submitted) record on IGI for marriage of William Pickup to Ann Harison (which I guess should be Hanson), which might explain the middle name. I think some certificates are now needed.

Rose, can you please tell me how you found William as Hanson in 1881?

Had to go. That 1881 census has to be him. He must be going by his middle name. The occupation, age, birthplace all match and he's in Leicester where he married the following year.

The family was also on the 1891 Lancs census, except Eliz's pob was in Sussex

You didn't mention Charles, although he was with the family in 1861. In 1871, he's a servant somewhere in Cgeshire, and in 1881 he's in Barton with his wife Eliz, daur Annie and sis Martha.
I don't see his birth on the GRO index, but he's on the local index.

Hmm,

Didn't expect the death of Martha, thanks, could be her as her son moved to Barton before 1881. Second marriage is also poss - I had no middle name for William H Pickup.

Confused by surname of Hanson in 1881. William was a joiner, and son Walter ties in. Bit remote to be in Leicestershire. Doubtful about this one.

Aren't you fast? Wow, I am impressed.

Found Martha b 1860 living with a brother in 1881 and later married, so don't bother with her.

Seems Annie is with her uncle William, whom I didn't know existed - her mmn was Ludlow (not Sudlow). Off for a look, if you are right, William Ludlow will be born in Rochdale, Lancs.
