Probably my suspicious mind but i think it was in 1861 his mum Jane and family lived on same street as "The Steels"
i can't think why she gave him the surname Steel and not acknowledge the father?

Hapiun Report 12 Jul 2009 11:49

the 1871 census is my George's, grandma Jane b1820 not mother Jane b1845. This is why my head goes in a muddle with them having same names. lol

As you know his actual birth date ,have you got his birth cert.
Seems he was illigitimate so his baptism record may name his dad, some vicars would name a father on the records.

Hapiun Report 12 Jul 2009 11:52

Yes i have got his birth cert just naming his mum

I didn't know the vicar/ Register office? would hold more info. Maybe i could contact someone from Salford register office? Do you know if they would tell me that info? Sorry to be a pain!

You would need the Parish records for his baptism.
As his cert doesnt give a dad then the chances of finding one is a bit remote ,unless you are lucky and its stated on his baptism.

Sorry Margaret i took off to watch F1! Just checked messages.
Do i just email the local archives office where he was born and ask if a claim for maintenance was made and do they keep copies of the bastardy orders from the year 1862?
Sorry about the late reply. Thanks
