This is before civil registration,so all you can see is the parish record.

This does not have the fathers names on it. It has the groom and bride, the ages they declared, and the witnesses.

If there's no desperate rush, I could check in Canterbury Cathedral Archives in the next few weeks sometime.

The transcribed marriage record from the Kent Family History Society CD for St. Mary Bredman details the following:

GILLMAN, William Groombridge 10.10.1801
RICHARDSON, Mary

It is not William Groombridge, but William Groombridge Gillman

Gwyn
if you wouldnt mind doing me a look up, I'm willing to wait, thank you so much for the offer

Choccy, that marriage is the One I found but now I am looking for his parents. I'm not sure where the Gilman bit comes in and no one else further down my tree uses it, and it doesnt appear to be any one's maiden name!! Odd.

Here is some more information that I found on the CD.

Gillman, Mary Ann 20.07.1806 Wm.Groombridge & Mary PAU
Gillman, Rebecca Groombridge 22.01.1804 Willm. Groombridge & Mary PAU
Groombridge, James Wanstall 11.12.1808 William & Mary Gillman PAU
Groombridge, Elizabeth 14.10.1810 William & Mary Gillman PAU

The above are baptisms at St Paul, of possible children.

This is possibly a child born before their marriage.

Richardson, William Gilman 12.04.1797 of Mary GEO

The marriage of William to Mary was by licence which means that there may be more useful info. on the licence.

Kent, Surrey, London: - Canterbury Marriage Licences, 1781-1809

My OH is a weekly! visitor to Canterbury Archives and would be happy to have a look at the licence.

Yes please Choocy
And that bapt before Marriage may explain the Gilman Groombridge name too., Maybe he kept the real dads name and then added his step dads name to it when his mum re married.

Thanks everyone for the help. Much appreciated,
Hope to get some news soon!!

Hello

Just thought i would add that my 4x G Grandad John Richardson is living on the 1841 census age 70, living in White Horse Lane, St Mary Bredman, Canterbury with the Groombridge family. John Groombridge is a Fishmonger.
Ref: HO107; Piece 486; Book 13; St Mary Bredman;
Enumeration District 6; Folio 7; Page 10; Line 22, GSU roll: 306878.

I have not found siblings or parents of John Richardson yet. Perhaps Mary Richardson is his sister ?

Oh are we related Paul?

Paul

Paul Report 12 Jul 2009 13:08

We may well be related Julie.

My 3x G Grandmother was Mary Ann Richardson born 1821 in canterbury. Her parents were John Richardson & Mary Pain. I have found more children of John & Mary born in Canterbury.

On Mary Ann Richardson's marriage cert of 1841 her father John Richardson is not stated to be deseased.

So i reckon he is the John Richardson living with the Groombridge family.

Cousin Paul!!
I descend from the Groombridge side
Henrieta Matilda Groombridge was my Great Great Grandmother.
I believe your Mary Richardson was her great grandmother

Paul

Paul Report 12 Jul 2009 20:27

Julie

I am a bit confused at the moment. lol.

Which Mary Richardson is the G Grandmother of your Henrietta Groombridge.

Is it Mary Richardson who married William Groombridge.
Or Mary Richardson nee Pain who married my John Richardson
Or Mary Ann Richardson my GGG Grandmother.

Paul

The first one

Paul

Paul Report 12 Jul 2009 20:58

Ok Julie.

It would be nice to find out if Mary who married William Groombridge is related to my John Richardson.

I have no idea where my John Richardson was baptized. I know he was not baptized in Canterbury. Do you know where Mary Richardson was baptized ?

Paul

JulieEssex

JulieEssex Report 13 Jul 2009 09:11

My Mary was baptised 1774 at St mary in Canterbury.

Paul

Paul Report 13 Jul 2009 11:59

Thanks for Mary Richardson's baptism info Julie. I shall keep a note of it.

A contact of mine who has a Canterbury parish record CD told me my John Richardson does not appear to be baptized in Canterbury.

Choccy Report 16 Jul 2009 13:30

My OH visited the Archives at Canterbury Cathedral yesterday. The unabridged marriage licence, unfortunately, had no further information relating to either side’s parents. The names of the two parties were
William Groombridge Gillman, Bachelor, age 30+ years, Yeoman and
Mary Richardson, Spinster, age 27+ years

He did check the baptism records for St Paul and found -

Gillman, Mary 19.06.1802 d of William and Mary Gillman – buried 8.08.1802

Gillman, Rebecca Groombridge 22.01.1804 Willm. Groombridge & Mary PAU
Gillman, Mary Ann 20.07.1806 Wm.Groombridge Gillman & Mary PAU
Groombridge, James Wanstall 11.12.1808 William & Mary Gillman PAU
Groombridge, Elizabeth 14.10.1810 William & Mary Gillman Groombridge PAU

The last baptism had the names in the order as shown above.
