And this is the James + Ellen marriage

2758/1870
GOLDEN JAMES GEORGE
BRUCE ELLEN
MUDGEE

And that certificate (or transcript) should give his parents' names, for the definitive answer and no more need for guessing.

Or is that where you got the Michael and Catherine names from, Darryl?

From your new thread, which should be deleted, as a duplicate.

"I am trying to piece together the family history of the Golden family in Australia with that in the United Kingdom. I have tracked back to a James George Golden who was born in Australia in 1842 but I am not sure who his parents were. I believe it was a Michael and Catherine Golden who had possibly emigrated from Ireland. Michael was born around 1815 possibly in Roscommon Ireland. Any help appreciated."

What brought this on? You seem to be randomly identifying and adopting James Golden-s.

How did you decide which one?

V18421016 61/1842
GOLDEN JAMES
RICHARD
CATE

V18422255 133/1842
GOLDEN JAMES
MICHAEL
CATHERINE

I know nothing, but there are Aussies here who are very obliging about these lookups.

The first thing to do is edit your subject line so it includes "Australia", so the right people see it.

You're probably using the .au mirror website. If you browse the Trying to Find board (not filtered for any surname), you'll see that virtually all queries here are regarding events in the UK, at the .co.uk main site.

Just click "edit" in the lower left of your first post, and you can add something like

to Australia 1851-1871?

and you should get some help. Good luck!

Thank you Jan. Sorry to stuff you around. Now that I have a possible window of emigration I hope I can nail it down. Do you have any suggestions for where I should look in regards to passengers lists for travelling to Australia.

Just a wee note, Jan:

"you need to look for records of him sailing between 1861 -1871(the next census for England)"

Actually between 1851 and 1871? if he was in the 1851 but not the 1861.

I don't see the rest of the 1851 Golden household in 1861, either. The family may have emigrated.

Okay, so I wasted I don't know how much time because you didn't mention the word "Australia" in your post.

Should have checked the clock ...

I have found the marriage of James and Ellen in the BMD NSW. They were married in 1870 at Mudgee NSW so that explains that but now I am trying to find out how and when the Goldens arrived in Australia.

Darryl

Darryl Report 8 Jul 2009 05:39

Thanks for the replies. Your first reply seems to be the one I want. It appears that the five year old James left England for Australia before the birth of his first son James in 1871 and then Alfred in 1874. I do not know at this time if he married Ellen in Australia or in England and then travelled over with her. I have been talking to James George's great grandson so some of the details a little bit vague at the moment but you seem to be on the right track. Looking forward to hearing from you in the future.

The closest it gets to a trace of an air of reality:

Marriages Mar 1913
Darton Ethel M (Golden) Islington 1b 424
Golden John J (Darton) Islington 1b 424

Sorry, but this is nuts.

These are the James Golden deaths registered 1911-1912:

Deaths Jun 1911
Golden James 2 Wigan 8c 37

Deaths Mar 1912
Golden James 61 Lanchester 10a 407

This is the only Ellen Golden death 1909-1912:

Deaths Mar 1912
Golden Ellen 50 Wigan 8c 104

Where are you getting your info??

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jul 2009 04:51

Also can't find a Golden + Marchant marriage, or an Ethel Marchant marriage to any Alfred who sounds like Golden. Or an Alfred Golden marriage to an Ethel (as so far transcribed at FreeBMD; can't search at Ancestry by given name of the spouse).

Or any Golden births with mother Marchant. (Maybe it was Ethel's second marriage?) There are three Brenda Golden births after 1916 -- 1937 to 1948 -- none with mother Marchant.

Can you find some confirming details for something at FreeBMD maybe and let us have a look?

The information you're trying to find is about James George Golden's ancestry?

Odd that I can't find James and Ellen together in various censuses I've tried.

The person you're looking at seems to be this one:

Name: James Golden
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1836
Gender: Male
Where born: Kent, England

Civil parish: Maidstone

James Golden 25
Sarah Ann Golden 25
James Golden 5
Elizabeth Golden 2
Sarah Ann Nickell 8

but is there a reason for that?

Trying to find information about James George Golden who I believe was born in Kent, possibly Maidstone, around 1835. He would have travelled from the U.K. to Australia sometime between 1851 census onwards. He does not appear in the 1861 census so I am trying to find how and when I arrived in Australia. He died in Australia in December 1911 at the age of 76. He had a wife named Ellen who died in 1910 at the age of 74. They had at least two children named Alfred John and the other was Jim (James). Alfred died in 1951 age 77. Any help would be appreciated. I am researching this family for a friend.
