Looks like Fryer to me on the 1851 - the P in Potts three lines above is different.

I think this is the marriage Anthony has found - can you confirm that you have the marriage cert, please, Anthony:

Marriages Sep 1877 (>99%)
Devall Harriatt Stone 6b 74
Friar Mary Stone 6b 74
PERRY James Stone 6b 74
Taberner Stanford Stone 6b 74

Sorry, see that you have added marriage cert details to your original post.

Anthony,

So did Mary A. Fryer marry your ancestor, James Perry? I couldn't find a marriage for him. You need to clarify some things before we all chase after the wrong family.

Yes, that is the family in 1861, still in Sedgley.

I am a bit confused by some of your dates. You say she was born in 1842 but you have found her in the 1841 census!

Presumably you found her father's name from her marriage cert?

Anthony

I am now narrowed down to finding Mary Fryer (1842) -- and given as c.1850 and c.1849 in the 1841 and 1851 census returns.

So far we have not found her in Sedgley after 1851 and assume that they had moved. Possibly the father James (1813) had died. Her sister Elizabeth (Betsy) and brother Thomas (1841) did not seem to be there either.
Her brothers William 1839 and James 1851 were still in Sedgely in 1881.

I have found Staffs marriage entries for two Marys with Samual Matthews in Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1875, and with James Perry (my ancestor) in Stone Staffs in 1877.

Anthony

Sorry!! Those census years should read 1851 and 1861.

Her parents' names are an issue. On the RC marriage cert they were left blank. On the 'official' cert, she gave her father as Thomas, so we think she was brought up by her brother Thomas for most of her life, but do not know where they were living after 1861.
