Marriage of Thomas Hallam and Sarah Kirk in Notts.

Thank you everybody for sending all the information.

The problem is that there were too many Thomas Hallams born around 1805-1808 in Leics. and Notts. As the 1841 census for East Leake does not show correct ages it is impossible to establish the year of birth of my Thomas. 1851 census in Loughborough shows the family with Sarah born in Loughborough.

I have looked for Sarah Cooper and this is just as difficult as there are so many of them too.

Tthe search continues!

John Cooper Hallam could (possibility only!) be the son of Sarah Hallam and her first husband who could have been a Cooper. He could then have taken the name of Hallam when his mother married Thomas Hallam.

You may therefore be able to find a marriage between a Mr Cooper and a Sarah.

Alternatively Cooper could be Sarah Hallam's maiden name in which case it is likely that John Cooper Hallam was born out of wedlock and was either Thomas Hallam's child therefore given his name or was given Thomas Hallam's name when he married Sarah.

You did say that it was possibly a 2nd marriage for Sarah so the marriage cert should give you more details.

Thanks Cynthia. Perhaps the mother`s maiden name was Cooper? I will have to try and follow that up. Sorry, but I must close now, I`m not in the UK and it is very late.

Maybe it was just a name from wayback in the family. Many times you see a mother's or grandmother's maiden name used as a middle name. It could even be the name of a friend.

Hopefully now you have the census info it will help you to move on. The familysearch site would be your best port of call.

Thanks everybody for your help. I wonder why the child is called John COOPER Hallam. There must be a reason for this as none of the other children of this couple have this middle name.

As you say they moved to Loughborough at some stage are you descended from one of their children?

The family posted is the only one with a wife called Sarah.

The IGI tutorial is on the Tips board. I've just nudged it up for you (2.05pm)

John Cooper is one of Thomas and Sarah's children. They are listed in age order.

It would be worth you taking a look at familysearch.com (IGI) as you will find that Thomas was probably born 1808. There is a submitted Pedigree file for him which should be treated cautiously, this states he was born in 1805. Extracted records are the most exact usually. There is also a Thomas Hallam born in 1808 in East Leake on the 1881 but he is married to a Mary.

You need to make sure you are following the right family.

There is a thread re making the search easier which I will nudge up for you but here's a tip I find useful.

When you have typed in the name, type, dob etc. and are faced with a million and one of the same name, simply click on ctrl and f and a small box will open. If you type in the name of the place eg.East Leake you are looking for, it takes you straight to any with that place name. Saves a heck of a lot of scrolling around!!!

It`s possible as it is Loughborough, but who is John Cooper Hallam?

Thomas is a labourer, not a lacemaker, so maybe not the right one

Jasrajan

The 1881 census is too far away. There are so many Thomas Hallams there, it is impossible to find the correct family.
Janet

Jasrajan Report 2 Jul 2009 11:30

The Thomas Hallam I am referring to was born about 1805/8 in East Leake, Leics. The marriage in 1845 was a second marriage. It might have been a second marriage for Sarah too. I know there were a lot of Thomas Hallams about, but mine was a lace maker. IF it is not too much trouble, perhaps you can send the census for 1851. I think the family I am looking for moved to Loughborough at some stage.

Helen in Bucks Report 2 Jul 2009 11:22

There are a few possibles on the 1851 census, however some of them seem maybe too old to have married in 1845 (unless this was a second marriage) and some of the children will have been born before 1845.

You really need to be able to narrow it down a bit more by establishing their ages at marriage (this may be on the original parish record, or you could order their marriage cert from the GRO). A marriage cert would also show you their father's names which may help you to find them on 1841 census.

Jasrajan Report 2 Jul 2009 11:07

I am looking for the census reports from 1851 to 1901 of the above couple. They married 27 JAN 1845 in Saint Peter, Nottingham, Nottingham, England. No more information is available.

Any help would be appreciated.
