Well done, Margaret - that's the only explanation that makes any sense. Thank you.

I can't find either birth or death of the first Rosina. Could it just be a mistake in her age on the 1871 census and it should be 12 weeks? She is listed after all of the other children.

Thanks for this info which I had previously considered and dismissed as Chittlehampton is quite a long way from Harford.

Have a look at the Devon Family History Society website.

They publish books of baptisms, marriages and deaths. They're about £2.50 each. Baptisms go from 1812-1826 and 1827-1839. Your guy is on the cusp so you may need both books.

I have their records for Instow and these give the name of the child, where they lived, name of the parents and occupation of the father plus the date of the baptism. The Chittlehampton records might hopefully be as comprehensive.

I am trying to trace the parents, siblings and ancestors of William Smith. He did marry a widow Mary A Hatton b. 1836 Lane End, Gloucs (husband was Isaac) and took on her two children William b.1857 and Mark b. 1864. William and Mary had at least two children - Rosina b. 1871 and Christmas Evan b.1877 & d. 1951.

According to 1871 England Census William had a daughter called Rosina b. 1859 and this suggests William was a widower when he married Mary A Hatton. I have not yet been able to find out what happened to the first Rosina.

Any information, pointers and hunches will be gratefully received.
