Tracy

I have a CD of marriages for Norfolk between 1801 & 1837. I have checked for marriages during this period for the surname Straw and there is not a single one! Neither Grooms or brides. So if you are looking for marriages during this period, Chapman would be the surname to look for if they were living in Norfolk. Perhaps the name changed from Straw to Chapman, before this period.

Now, there are hundreds of marriages for Chapman surname and it would be helpful if you have an area in Norfolk for the family for me to narrow it down. However, If Joseph Chapman was born in 1828, I have found these 3 marriages for Samuel Chapman but it could be any one of them.

15/11/1825 Samuel Chapman & Phoebe Etheridge at East Bradenham

20/6/1826 Samuel Chapman & Hannah Rice at St Giles, Norwich

14/4/1828 Samuel Chapman & Mary Caley at Gt Massingham

How do you know that Joseph's father was a Samuel Chapman? Do you have a copy of his baptism record, or perhaps you got it from the marriage certificate.

I must point out, that if Joseph was born in Barnsley, his parents may also have been married in Barnsley in which case, the above marriages would not apply.

Have you traced the family on the census' in 1841, 1851 etc. What does it state for Samuel's pob?

If you can give me more info as to area in Norfolk, I can look again.

Good luck
Dee

Grandma definatley remembers thaat the chapmans used to be called straw but cant tell us why some of them changed their surname.
Hope this sheds some light on something for me.

Hi could anyone possibly help me I have managed to trace my grandmothers family back to around 1828 Joesph Chapman Ithing his father was called Samual born in 1800's. The problem is my mother remembers my gran telling her that the family name used to be straw and that some of the son's changed it to chapman as there is some big dark secret. My grandma now has alzheimers and can't tell us a thing about her past even on a good day. I was hoping to beable to gather as much info as I could for her before she lost all her memory. So therefore any and all help would be fantastic.
