Thank you so much Elizabeth. You have confirmed what I needed to know in that Robert and Sophia not only had a son William born 1813 who I think is the father of the Jane Gammon I was looking for, but that they also had a son Daniel Gammon born 1805 in Shillingford. To cut a very long story short, I have been given a beautiful photo of the Gammon family which was in some old possesions of the Caudwell family. My aim was to try and link my Jane Gammon married to Henry Caudwell with the Gammon people in the photo. I felt there had to be a connection, else why would the Caudwells have had the photo. Anyway, I managed to build a skeleton tree of the people in the photo (luckily they were named) but couldn't find the link to Jane. It would now appear that I have that link as Daniel Gammon born 1805 being the brother of William Gammon born 1813 would have been Jane Gammon's uncle. Thank you so much for all your help - you've been a gem! Regards, Nicky |

Hi Elizabeth, Can I be really cheeky and ask if the Warborough P/R you have cover the area of Shillingford? I think I may have made a breakthrough with help from others and wondered if your CD covers Shillingford and if you would mind checking to see if a Daniel Gammon was born in Shillingford to parents Robert and Sophia Gammon c1805 and brother William Gammon born c1813 also to the same parents. Many thanks. Nicky |

Thanks to everyone for all your suggestions. I guess I will just have to be patient and wait for the marriage certificate to confirm who Jane's father was then I can go delving around a bit more. |

Perhaps the parents died when the children were very young...hence why in 1851 Jane was working in service |

Unfortunately, Jane is not with her parents on the 1841 census: |

Hi Derek, yes, i've just spotted this one myself now that I have had the possible parents namesof William and Sarah. It's possible that this is the family I am looking for and that there was a slight error when entering the children in that James was listed as the 3 year old when in fact it would have been Jane and the baby would have been just 8/9 months old and George would not yet have been born. I am now going to try to track this family through the census to see what happens to them. Thanks again. |

Thank you Elizabeth - this is so helpful. Where did you find this information? I have called for the marriage certificate of Jane Gammon and Henry Caudwell and hopefully now it will say that Jane's father was a William Gammon. Thanks Nicky |

Yes, you could well be right Derek. Their first son was born in Holborn, Middex in June 1858 just 2 months after the marriage which I think occurred in April of the same year! Perhaps they thought they had better marry away from any scandal which I am sure there would have been at the time! |

they may have never got married and pretended: who knows he was 45 and she was 13 when they met so it might not have gone down too well back then doing a wedding with all the family etc so keep an open mind |

Hi Sablon, Yes I know the birth certificate will give both parents, but it won't confirm if she is my Jane Gammon. I will order the marriage certificate first and see what that says and then go for the birth certificate. I'm not convinced she was born in the Wallingford district although future census is recorded as her being born in Warborough which I know falls in this area. Thanks for all your help. Nicky |
