Hi all

Seeking info on James CLOSE.

Born c1840 in Northallerton, Yorks. He came to Australia and married (twice, 1875 & 1889) in Victoria, then went to Western Australia, where he died in 1907 aged 68 (I have info on wives, children and burial, thanx!).

Just seeking info about his parents and siblings please!

It is possible he came to Victoria aged only 5 in 1844 aboard 'Wallace' - if so, his parents were Thomas (39) & Margaret (37) and he had siblings John (13) Elizabeth (12) Martha Jane (9) Thos (8) and Agnes (1). However, looking at the vicbdms this family had links back to Armargh, so not sure.

Cannot find this family in 1851 census

Ainderby Steeple is just three miles form Northallerton. It has it's own church St Helens, annoyingly the parish records for the baptisms on the IGi have a gap in them for the years you need . the full records are in the North Yorkshire records office in Northallerton

Thanks for the extra info Linda, it is hard being an Aussie and not knowing the placenames at all! His 2nd marriage showed his birthplace as 'Nathallerton', luckily Google helped me on that one! Maybe it was the Yorkshire accent ;-)

Its interesting that you say James gives his birth as Nathallerton.

I have a sister in law who lives there.I also used to live in Yorkshire and pronounced it as Nathallerton or ( Nuthallerton to the ear).

Quinsgran - there you go, it all makes perfect sense! :-)

Just to update - have just received James jnr's marriage certificate and it shows his parents as James CLOSE (farmer) and Jane WATSON.

This seems to fit neatly with the census info.

Can I just ask where James snr was born, if it is shown in the 1841 census?

Found Jas jnr's sister Mary's birth in Northallerton in 1839. Possible marriage to John Roger ATKINSON in Northallerton in 1862.

Any sign of her in 1871 census? I think I have her in 1881 as ATKINSON, aged 42, living in Durham with 5 children (youngest 4 born in Stockton on Tees, Durham).

Also George CLOSE aged 7 and shown as grandson - does that mean Mary had a child at age 15/16?!

He became George Francis Atkinson so looks as though she had George before she married

Ah, yes thank you Barbara, that makes perfect sense.
I missed that he was 7 months and assumed it was 7 yrs.
That explains him on the 1881 census aged 20 (as ATKINSON, as you say). Her husband John - in 1871, Barbara, you have him as a printer but in 1881 he is a painter employing 6 men and 6 boys? He is still in Durham in 1901 census aged 60 (as a painter and decorator) but died a couple of years later.

I wonder if John CLOSE who lived next door was James' brother...!?

I found George's marriage to Isabella (her 2nd marriage too) in Northallerton, I think a year after Jane died in Stockton. All fits together very neatly!

The 1871 census says he was a Printer but I think you are right as on this census the 1861 he is living with his brother and it states he is a Apprentice painter
