I've just had a breakthrough but I'd like to thank you all for answering my request tonight and for your suggestions.

Choccy - I put some of the names from the 1881 census that you found into the name search and they came up with someone who contacted me when I first joined GR about 4 years ago. We definetly had a connection with our trees and although I remember trying to get in touch again she didn't reply but all the names and places of births are the same as the census. I do remember there was a connection with Tunbridge Wells in Kent and one of the children was born there.

With everybody's help and a bit of thought I've got the right family at last.

I found this 1881 census and Edith was born in Dartmouth. My geography isn't great but it's in the right area and I'm wondering if this is a possible.

If I had to choose which one is my Edith, how could I choose the right one?

Got my hopes up when I saw the marriage coverage for June qtr 1887 was at less than 50%

Thanks Choccy, I did get that 1881 census but I can't be sure it's the right one. I found another one with an Edith Jarvis born about the same time and so perhaps that is her! Who knows?

Without a marriage certificate how can I be sure who her father was?

According to 1911 census it says they've been married 24 years which would mean they married in 1887 but there doesn't seem to be a marriage for them. I must admit I asked about a month ago and somebody suggested that perhaps because of the age difference Edward may have been married before and so therefore they didn't get married. It's just so frustrating not being able to find who her parents were.

Note the 1881 census for Edward Bartlett says 'married', but you never know with enumerators - especially as there is no husband in the family. Enumerator might have assumed Edward married to his mother ?! On the other hand, Edward might have been married, so couldn't marry Edith.

I agree it's a bit strange but that's what it says. I wish I could find their marriage but can't find that and no birth for Edith. This family is proving hard to track.

That's odd that he's Edward Hervey. There's only one Edward Bartlett born Wycombe on all the census records and he's Edward W in 1861 and 1871.

Rose - I have birth certificate for daughter Dorothy and her fathers name is Edward Hervey Bartlett.

Her husband was born Edward William Bartlett but I don't see a marriage.

If you have have her in 1891, 1901 and 1911 , where does it say she was born? It must say more than just Devon.

I need some help please. I'm looking for a birth for Edith Jarvis born in Devon about 1868/9. I have looked on FreeBMD but not sure if any of them are her. I don't have very much information on her as I've not been able to find a marriage and so have no idea who her father was. I found 2 families on the 1881 census that could be possibles but cannot be sure if either of them are the right one. Would be grateful for any advice. Thanks
