Find Ancestors

I'm trying to help a relative (by marriage) trace her GT Grandfather's family.

John McDonnell born c.1837 Ireland..possibly Cork.
He died aged 38, 1878 Bristol and his widow Mary Ann was the informant. They lived at 3 James Street Bristol.

They were married in St. Marys RC Church, Bristol in 1860.
John McDonnell was aged 23 and his father was Francis, a Farmer.
(I'm waiting to hear from her about Mary's father's name and occupation)

John McDonnell was a traveller in the cloth trade, apparently.

This is the only census record we can find for Mary Ann McDonnell for sure...so far.

The christian names match, but ?

Found this on Ancestry but it is a very peculiar page with different districts on it but John McDonnell married Bristol 1860 Jun Q vol 6a page 1 1
The only Mary Ann on the page marrying in Bristol is MARY ANN FIELD

Just heard back from my relative..(another Teresa) and she has sent me a copy of the marriage certificate.

I have to say..it's difficult to read!

Mary Ann's maiden name is O'Connor and I think..her father's name is Hugh O'Connor, a Labourer.

John McDonnell is a 'Traveller in Cloth Trade' his father Francis is a farmer.

Can't read the addresses only Bristol.

However...one of the witnesses is Michael Canty.

I found Mary Ann MacDonnel on the 1861 census living in Thornbury, Granddaughter of Michael & Mary Canty (1798 & 1800) of Cork Ireland.
Also Mary Ann's son Michael MacDonnel aged under 1 month born Thornbury Glos..
(Plus Ann Jackson 1794 ,Sister ,Cork Ireland.)

No John McDonnel though!

Teresa tells me "In the 1901 census Mary was living with my grandmother Alice"

So I think that is her you found on the 1901!

1891 looks good too.

Not sure about the 1871 or 1851 though.

I've since found Mary Ann Connor living with her Grandparents Michael & Mary Canty on the 1851 Census...in Thornbury.

The grandparents are living on their own on 1841 census in Thornbury.

No Trace of Mary Ann Connor/O'Connor's parents..not that we know her mother's name anyway!

If you can find anything else...it would be a God send!

Teresa....Heres some Canty bits and pieces ...may fit in somewhere later if its the same family.....
The Canty surname is predominently found in the Mallow area of the Co.Cork...Union of Fermoy.
Originally spelt Canthy so far earliest I have found is a record taken of the Heads of Households 1766 for the Parish of Kilmichael..although there is ref.to a pardon being given in 1601 to a Dermot O'Canty Castellmahoune (now Castle Bernard) so the name goes way back.

Syl.(probably Sylvester) Canthy. Household of 6 Papists.

He, being John McDonnell..father Francis a farmer.

Unfortunately no names known.

Looking at John McDonnell's marriage certificate (June 1860) his age could be 20, 23 or 25!
