I know I had absolutely no luck either with any of them, and I tried and tried.

There are definitely mistranscriptions in the 1911, and that is one possibiity.

I might start by getting whatever certificates seem likely or even possible, and trying to sort out the 1901 household members and their relationships, and what names they might have been likely to be going by.

Ellen in 1891 in Birmingham, Smethwick

Name: Ellen Day
Age: 24
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867
Relation: Lodger
Where born: Birmingham

Occupation: Tailoress

So if her birth surname was Ellen Day, the info on the Frederick Day death record wouldn't match -- unless he made up a father, as was not unusual.

So here is Ellen's family in 1881 in Birmingham:

William Day 43 - cab proprietor
Martha Day 50
Ellen Day 6
Emily Hales 25 - lodger

And in 1881:

Martha Day 63 - widow, milk [seller?]
Ellen Day 16 - tailoress
Thomas Flower 23 - boarder
John Hall 24 - boarder

Just to add, what is particularly sad about that Frederick's death is that he died two days after the Armistice.

My mother's uncle died in October 1918 and is also buried in Etaples Cemetery. He had been gased a couple of weeks earlier, and died in a US field hospital (he was Canadian). That is probably what happened to Frederick Day also, I would guess.

Okay. Are you reading, merrylegs?

What do you think of the possibility that the two older children were born Day, and that brother Frederick was killed in WWI?

You spoke of a split in the family. Between William and Ellen?

I'm not having any luck finding any of these people with any of the others in the 1911 census.

JaneyCanuck Report 24 May 2009 19:53

I think my theory may be correct, and unfortunately that gives us a sad outcome for brother Frederick.

Name: DAY, FREDERICK
Initials: F
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Company Quartermaster Serjeant
Regiment/Service: East Yorkshire Regiment
Unit Text: 4th Bn.
> Age: 29
Date of Death: 13/11/1918
Service No: 200817
> Additional information: Eldest son of Ellen Day, of 57, Glencoe St., Newington, Hull, and the late R. R. Day.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: L. B. 11.
Cemetery: ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY

If that Frederick had been married, his wife's name would have been given.

His age matches the age of the Frederick Thomas in the 1901 census, and his mother's name was Ellen Day, the name you gave as your William's mother.

You started out by saying your father was born 1 December 1901, but now you have said he was born 31 July 1901.

Could you read over what you have said, and the info given in the thread?

Do you have your William's birth certificate, and are the names William Thomas and Ellen Day the parents' names on that certificate? - edit - yes, you've answered that now.

on william george birth cert it has his mom as ellen thomas late edwards formely day residence was 1 back 249 ickneild port road xx

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 24 May 2009 19:45

So, what I was getting at there was that the two oldest siblings of your William may not have been born as Thomas, but as Day.

So if you are looking for them in later life, you might need to look for that surname.

There doesn't seem to be a marriage for William Thomas to Ellen Day. Do you have your William Jr's mother's name from his birth certificate?

Since Ellen seems to have had two children as Day, it sounds like she was previously married.

If we could find her and/or the two older children and/or William Thomas Sr in the 1891 census, it would help, but I've had no luck.

A possible marriage for Lily:

Marriages Jun 1910
Bennett Henry B_tts King's N. 6c 781
Bette-Bennett Henry King's N. 6c 781
> Day Lily Maud Kings N 6c 781
McPherson Annie Kings N. 6c 781
Rosenberg Lucy King's N. 6c 781
WOOD Frank Aubrey King's N. 6c 781

Another:

Marriages Mar 1915
Allen Pamela Stanley W.Bromwich 6b 1035
Old James B Thomas W.Bromwich 6b 1035
Stanley Samuel Allen W.Bromwich 6b 1035
> Thomas Lilian M D Old W.Bromwich 6b 1035

The M D could well be for Maud Day.

A switch from Lily to Lilian would not be unexpected. My grandmother did it when she married, and I have seen other examples in families here at GR.
