Thanks Ginny. Think I will cut and paste this to my original and change heading - hoping you don't mind?

Precise; dont waffle on about things that wont help you find the info you want. Keep it clear and use gaps to break down your info. A mass of sprawling text puts people off reading

Patience = Sometimes the results can be quick (as you have probably seen on the thread boards) and they can also be a long term search. When posting your message put ALL the info you have its frustrating to "post" and then be told "I already know that".

Perserverance = Sometimes this will be necessary to find who you are looking for. If you don't get any results the first time round why not bookmark your thread - left side of the page - and then you can then always reinstate it to update or "nudge" back onto the boards.

Proof = Always try and "prove out" any inforrmation given

Privacy = Remember when looking for "living relatives" these boards are an open forum and as such great care should be taken when putting information on them.

Politeness = Well that speaks for iteself. A please and thank you is always appreciated
