Hi
Just to let you know that the Cooke family you found on the 1911 census is Elizabeth's The grandson Leslie 1908 is not my father. He must be from one of her siblings. I will send for the marriage cert in Derbyshire, as I feel sure this is the correct one.
I am trying to trace the mother and fathers marriage George and Hannah appear to have married in Altrincham ( where I now live, and where my mothers family come from). I think Hannah was called Cheetham but I am not sure.
Once again thanks for your help and interest..

1911 in Chorlton

COOKE GEORGE 1853 58 Chorlton Lancashire
COOKE HANAH 1857 54
COOKE WALTER EDWARD 1894 17
COOKE STANLEY WALLACE 1904 7
COOKE LESLIE 1908 3

Just in case you didn't have that.

And there's the Elizabeth there (born Isle of Man)

COOKE ELIZABETH ADA 1888 23 Chorlton Lancashire

but not living with George and Hannah.

Just in case that helps at all!

Yes Iam getting a little confused myself. The 1901census show me this family of Cookes now living 35 Tunis Road Fulham London with 4 youngest children Elizabeth being the still at home aged 13, her 3 elder sisters must have been working by then. ( This is the Latchford Warrington family ). As I have said I am very grateful to you but I have to log off for now untill tomorrow afternoon Elizabeth dob 29 oct 1887 on free bmd site IOM

Okay, Ancestry has them in 1901 as COOTE.

One thing to do -- correct that name and leave an (anonymous) email address where you can be contacted by any relations who one day look for them.

I'm getting muddler and muddler. ;)

The Elizabeth Ada Cooke in 1911 who was born in Isle of Man is living with the other Cookes I posted above, in Didsbury.

Is she not your Elizabeth then? Or was she living with other relations?

I'm absolutely hanged if I can find your Elizabeth born Isle of Man in 1901.

Thank you for the further infomation I shall certainly look into the Richardson connections. I should add that I was told that she had got pregnant while in London and came back north to relatives. The address on my fathers birth cert was a "Birthing house" here in Manchester.

Thank you for your help and interest. She gave my father to a family to be looked after at 3months old, but did keep in touch and see him untill 1912, then nothing. I have by the way traced her family back quite a way her father was George Cooke and mother Hannah Cheetham Cooke.George and his forebears came from Hereford Hannah from Altrincham Cheshire. Although most census say Elizabeth was born in Latchford as was her six siblings on the 1901 census I find the family in London where it states her birthplace as the IOM. I have been unsble to trace any of her siblings.

If you search at FreeBMD for

births
surname Richardson
mother Cooke
(you don't need to include dates, because that will find births only after 1911)

you will see two Richardson-Cooke births in Chesterfield, and also one in Mansfield that could be a possible.

If you search for Richardson-Cooke marriages 1900-1920 ... there is one in 1914 in Chesterfield that could account for both those births, so only the birth certificates would say.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 17 May 2009 17:08

Now that does raise possibilities, and it would probably be worth getting that marriage certificate.

If that is the correct household in 1911, would the child born 1908 be your father? Not to pry, just wondering whether that info helped.

My father was her illegitamate son born 1908 in Manchester.Having been born and brought up myself in sth M/c I know the area very well. The Didsbury adress in1911 was next door to the railway station the line ran to Derbyshire, also that marriage was in a Primitiive Methodist Chapel .My guess is that she met some one and could not acknowledge she had a son.The last my father heard from her was in Dec 1912 posted in Didsbury. I of course dont know if she went on to have more children.

1911 census - searched for Elizabeth Cooke, born 1887 +/- 2 years, Isle of Man.

Didsbury seems to be in Chorlton. I searched in 1911 for Cooke in Didsbury living with Elizabeth Ada Cooke now, and there are:

COOKE ROBERT 1867 44
COOKE EDITH 1872 39
COOKE JAMES ASTAN 1898 13
COOKE ROBERT OLDHAM 1899 12
COOKE REGINALD GARFORTH 1902 9
COOKE FRANCIS JOHN 1908 3

That them?

Dorothy Report 17 May 2009 16:38

She was living in Didsbury Sth Manchester in 1911 unmarried at that time. You say that she was in Chorlton Manchester where did you find this from?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 17 May 2009 16:37

Was there something about the marriage to Richardson that made you look at that one?

This one might be more likely, just for guessing purposes:

Marriages Sep 1911
Cooke Elizabeth A Bolton 8c 939
Hodgkiss John Bolton 8c 939

If you explain a bit it could help. You don't know whether she had children, presumably? Is she the sibling of an ancestor of yours?

JaneyCanuck Report 17 May 2009 16:33

You have to order and pay for the marriage certificate, which you do here:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

It will give you her age and father's name. I wouldn't be rushing off to do that, though!

Thakyou for your reply , but I need to know how to find if this is the Elizabeth Ada Cooke that Iam looking for,I really need to see that particular marriage cert.to be sure. I am not sure how to go about it .

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 17 May 2009 16:32

1911 (born Isle of Man)

COOKE ELIZABETH ADA 1888 23 Chorlton Lancashire

She would likely have used her middle initial when she married.

JaneyCanuck Report 17 May 2009 16:30

Heh. Is the question that you see that marriage, but don't know whether it's your Elizabeth?

You know where she was in 1911. Why not tell us??

Elizabeth Ada Cooke 29/10/1887 born IOM was my grandmother.I know where she was in1911,but need to find out if she married after this date. I have a wild guess that she could have married James Richardson early 1912 in Clay Cross Derbyshire.Could any one help me with this?
