I have been struggling with my TROKE gt grandparents for what seems like decades! Can anyone suggest a way forward.

I can't find a marriage for THOMAS TROKE and JANE?
Thomas was born 1835 in Exeter.

I have him on 1851 census with parents, can't find him in 1861.

1871 he is in Welshpool aged 36, wife Jane aged 35 and 3 children CAROLINE LUCY 5 born Oswestry,Salop MARY ELLEN 3 born Welshpool and GEORGE THOMAS 1 born Welshpool. Jane's entry is crossed out and "not at home" written over but I can't find her anywhere else.

I have the birth certificates for the 3 children and on each Jane's maiden name is different DIXON, DICKSON and DICKINSON
How do I look for a birth for her ?

They aren't on the 1881 census - my grandfather was born 1883 in France and on the 1891 they are in Newington, London but spelt Trooke and Jane's age is now 45 (when it should be 55!) Jane's birth place is given as Liverpool.

What a puzzle, can anyone think of a way forward, PLEASE?

No I don't think so Ann. Most of the Trokes seem to come from Dorset but there doesn't appear to be a connection to my Devon Trokes, but thanks for looking. Jayne

Thanks Pollypocket, I hadn't found the 1841 census but I do have this Troke family back to the early 18th century. Its really his elusive wife that I am searching for. I'm sorry I didn't make myself very clear. I thought if I added any more info to my original post it would become just too confusing.
thanks again for your help

what was Thomas's proffession ?

Jayne

Jayne Report 16 May 2009 11:46

Hi RamblinRose, in 1891 andi1901 he was a gas meter maker, in 1871 he was a tinplate worker in 1851 he was a tinman (sound like something from the Wizard of Oz!)

my thinking on that was it might help to find him if he was mistranscribed on 1861, to see if he was married by then...but can't find him... have tried obvious mistranscriptions of name if anyone can think of something else?

Jayne

Jayne Report 16 May 2009 12:06

My thinking on a marriage before 1861 is - that as there are 3 children close together born c. 1866, 68 and 70 they were obviously rather fertile so there would have be 2 or 3 more children prior to those three.
This brings me to another puzzle - the 12 year gap between George and my grandfather ALFRED GARNET TROKE born in Paris.

I.m wondering if this child is actually the son of the eldest daughter Coroline Lucy and was brought up as the son of Thomas and Jane. As he was born is Paris it would have been easy to bring him back to this country as theirs'. This would account for Jane "loosing" 10 years off her age in subsequent censuses.

Of course another possibility is that he actually married 2 different Janes! but I think this is unlikely don't you?

Just another problem on this elusive Jane - I can't find her death either! She was still alive in 1901 but I haven't bought credits for the 1911 census yet. I believe Thomas died 1909 and awaiting the cert. from GRO

Jayne, re marrying two Janes being unlikely...well, no lol..I had a heck of a time with my gt gt grandfather's wife Annie ( I knew she was Annie before researching...and couldn't work out how she could still be on a census after she died! He married within the year of her death, another Annie...so may be worth thinking about

There are only 3 jane trokes on 1911 and only one is likely re DOB...but not location

Jayne Report 16 May 2009 12:31

Maybe Rose but I can't find one marriage for Thomas let alone 2! But I suppose it would explain the gap between George and Alfred and there's nothing to suggest that he'd marry the second Jane as he apparently didn't marry the first.
I think he was a bit of a rogue, I have been told 3rd hand that he and the family aren't on the 1881 census because they went to Buenos Aires to escape debt!!! But I have no way of confirming this. I was in correspondence with a lady who contacted me because we were researching the same Troke family. She was do research on behalf of the granddaughter of one of Thomas's daughters but either the researcher was unwilling to put me in touch or this lady declined contact. This was rather upsetting as I know none of my Troke family - my parents divorced when I was a baby and I never knew my father.
The whole business of the Troke family seems shrouded in secretcy and mystery!

Hi Rose, where was the possible Jane in 1911. It seems to me that she could have been anywhere in the UK given their travelling record. If there is one faintly possible I will buy some credits and spend a wet saturday afternoon catching up on some of my other family puzzles

Think it could be your Jane in Southwark cos there is also an Alfred Troke in Southwark with correct birthyear.Looks like living in same household.

Might be an idea to get some credits and have a look.
