Hi Hayley -- sorry, I usually add the URL just as a matter of course.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

You order on line with a credit card, using the details from the GRO index -- year, quarter, district, name, volume, page.

It takes a few days for the certificate to arrive.

What a birth certificate does is

- give you the parents full names

- give you an exact date of birth, which can be used to search for a death, even without a surname (or rule out death, if none is found after 1971, when birth dates were first recorded in the index, with a matching birthdate)

Remember that for any event from the mid-1920s to 1984, you likely won't find it at FreeBMD, because the transcription isn't complete. Ancestry has complete births up to 2005, and complete deaths and marriages only after 1984, in the searchable transcribed database.

It being Olive May's kids you're looking for, you're going to have to hope for luck with the electoral roll, the telephone directory, and maybe google. And trawling the untranscribed indexes for marriages before 1984, so you can then also search for any grown children then may have.

FreeBMD is constantly moving ahead, so in a few months all the searching for marriages and deaths may be possible on line.

Oh, of course -- if Sylvia has found a marriage, she has a married surname for Olive May, and now you get her to search the births index at Ancestry for children of the marriage!

(Sylvia didn't put that info here because Olive May, and certainly her children, are likely still living, and don't know they're being talked about, so it wouldn't be right to put those kinds of personal details on the boards where anyone can find them on a google search, for instance.)

thanks for reply janey, how do i go about getting the birth certificate? can i order it somehow, and what could i do with the infomation, i have tried loking under marriage cert. but nothing comes up with olive may sargeant, i have tried under all the differnet spellings, still nothing that relates to that olive may we found, so i thought i was doing it wrong, so i tried my mums and dads records cause i know all the info and that never come up wither , so i know i must be doing it wrong, even though i entered all the info in,
No they didnt know anything about my nans first family really, i think when she left her husband she never really see that set of children alot more, cause she didnt tell her children with my grandad, till they were all adults, and only then cause they turned up on her door, so she had to explain who they were, i dont know how someone can do that and i know my mum really wants to get in touch with them to talk about things. but noone really knew anything at the funeral about the other family apart from when they were kids. and they are all quite old and didnt really remember anything, or i suppose didnt want to tell mum, dont know. apart from its really upseting mum she cant find anyone....

I wouldn't worry about the Hemp/Kemp thing, Hayley. I've seen loads of really stupid mistakes in the GRO index, especially for mother's surnames. That is surely one of them. Whoever copied the name misread "Kemp".

But you do need the birth certificate to be absolutely certain.

So no one at the funeral knew anything about where she had got to?

hi, i have a reply for shelia and sylivie, first thanks for all info u have gave me so far. my mum went to my nans (ivy) sisters funeral today, she hasnt seen her in years but wanted to go in respect for her mum, well she has always known her aunt as loli, but at the funeral they said her name was Olive May kemp, so it seems that the May we was looking for (mums half sister) could be that olive may that u found in the records, but that her surname is spelt wrong, sargeant and should be sargent and that mothers maiden name is wrong as well, hemp and should be kemp.

it seems that ivy named her daughter (first born) after her sister.

records say
olive may sargeant mothers maiden name hemp born 1942 brentwood, essex

i have been trying to look for marriage certifiacite or even death cert. but cant seem to find anything, if anyone could help then we would really appriate it. thanks hayley x

Hayley Report 15 May 2009 13:27

have asked mum about the births register for her and she did say that her mum did have a passport for her in name of sargent. so yes she must be registered twice, but cant work out why the other frost children antony, sue are not coming up as both as well as they r older than my mum.
she also said that she dont think that ivy got divorced from her first husband fredrick, thats why she never married frank frost.
i know have lot of info so thanks, i have a address for a barry now and have wrote and sent letter, just waiting for a response to see if it him,
has anyone any ideas how else i can go about getting other possible address for any of the sargent family. i have wrote to loads of people on this site trough mathches on trees and through friends reunited but all been wrong family or no replies.
thanks in advance
hayley x

Hi Hayley

Sylvia could be onto something, I have tried looking and cannot find Mays birth anywhere with the MMN Kemp, but it could be mis-transcibed as Hemp as it is the right area and she is the right age.

By the way the surname if spelt wrong to, it is under SARGEANT :O)

Hayley

Hayley Report 15 May 2009 08:30

yes sylvie, that sounds like a real possibility being called by her middle name. is it likely that is could have been typed wrong on the register, as its the first time i had dealing with all this im not to sure if this is normal.
but i told my mum and she is jumping about with joy, lol,
will have a little looky about olive sargent. thanks again xx

Hayley,
You appear to have two threads running on same family (naughty girl)

I have posted this on your other thread as well.

Olive M Sargent birth registered JAS quarter 1942 Brentwood 4a 1023 mothers maiden name Hemp think this could be mistranscribed.

Think she could have been Olive May Sargent known as May perhaps.??

If you go to Whirley's thread

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1133232

you can send her a private message (click on her name there) and ask her to look up for you, on the electoral roll before 2009:

Barry F Sargent

He is probably the right person - your mum's half-brother from Ivy's first marriage. (I found the births in the index at Ancestry, and that is his name.)

Hi Hayley
They would be your mums half-siblings, not step, because they share a parent, have you tried Friends Reunited? There is a possible for Valerie, right age range..... give it a go
Good luck
