There are medical directories on Ancestry which I've only just realised!

This is all really useful information, so thank you everybody.

I have already found out lots about the possible lead with the ship from New York that my great grand-parents could have come over on. Etruria was a Cunard Line Ship and was launched on 20 September 1884 and was scrapped in Preston in 1909/10.

I have emailed the New York Public Library and New York National Archives to get hold of the passenger list from New York to Liverpool for 1891.

I am also going to order the birth and death certificates based on the information that you have all provided me with to determine if this is indeed the same person.

Any other information concerning Samuel Max Hurst and his father would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks everybody :)

There are medical directories but the only place I know that has copies is the National Archives in Kew. You could try the phone books on Ancestry though.

Hi,
Yes,the mother's maiden name is given as BENENSOHN. Sorry,I don't know of any medical directories.
I wonder if some sort of JewishGen list might be able to help you a little more?

Think you should invest in the birth certificate for Samuel.

The name Benensohn occurs again .
Basche Benensohn marries Philip Fagelson 1923 in whitechapel London.
Jenie Herschowitz marries Charles Marks in Mile End London 1911.

Hi Maureen,

Thanks for this info, I will certainly look into everything that everyone has provided me with.

Is Benensohn his mother's maiden name? I have been given his date of birth by by somebody else on here as being 12 March 1915, which the dates certainly would tie up to when he got married.

I'm very intrigued by Samuel Hurst, where he came from, what country he was born in. This is all very new to me and I'm intrigued as to why my mother refuses to speak about him.

You don't happen to know a website that lists doctors names on or around 1941?

Many thanks.

Ah,
I wonder about this birth:
FreeBMD
Births Mar 1915
Herschkowitz Samuel M Benensohn Nottingham 7b 682

Although I'm a bit dubious about the mother's maiden name!

Dear Maureen and Lesley,

My apologies; I meant marriage certificate. Samuel was 26 years old when he got married, which means he was born 1914/15. It is his father's name that I am unable to read on the marriage certificate.

The first part of his father's name certainly reads Joseph-Jacob (written with the hyphen between the names). It is the surname that is very difficult to read. From what I can make out to appears to read Hewchovitz or Llewchovitz and it does state that his occupation was a diamond merchant.

Hope this helps.

How old was Samuel on his marriage certificate?

You said "I have no further details but suspect that Samuel Max Hurst may be of jewish origen as his father, my great grandfather, has a jewish looking name, but a name that we are unable to read on the birth certificates."
What birth certificates??? Can you hazard a guess as to the name??

Hi if Samuel was born 1915,it should show mothers maiden name.I looked on Free BMD he is not on there, maybe someone with Ancestry can look this bit up.

I found his death by going to a website called Familyrelatives.I type in to google deaths 1984 to 2005 and the above website comes up.If i type in Familyrelatives i cannot seem to go to the bmd section.

Best of luck Laura

Hi Lesley,

I'm afraid I don't know his mothers maiden name. Samuel Max Hurst is not discussed and my mother will not discuss the topic so the only information I have is what I have provided in my original post.

Is there anything I can do online to find out more information.

Many thanks for your help.

Laura

Laura Report 13 May 2009 12:34

Thank you Sam, I will look into this and see what I can find. Can I ask how you managed to find those details? I am very new to this family tracing and would love to find out if there are other searches or techniques to do traces.

I am trying to find my grand father, Samuel Max Hurst, who married Doris Hadley on 13 September 1941. At the time he was working as a doctor of medicine and in 1945 was working as a buyer for a metal works company on Wheeleys Road in Birmingham.

They had 4 children, Alexsandra Margaret Baker, born 12 February 1945, Edward Hurst, David Hurst and Jacqueline Hurst, who was born on 18 September 1942 and died 25 December 1972.

I have no further details but suspect that Samuel Max Hurst may be of jewish origen as his father, my great grandfather, has a jewish looking name, but a name that we are unable to read on the birth certificates.

Samuel Max Hurst and Doris Handley were married on 13 September 1941 at St Faith and St Lawrence Church, Court Oak Road, Birmingham.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
