Want - family from London/Abingdon

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Wayne Report 6 May 2009 07:49

Trying to find information on Edward Albert Want who seems to have been born in Chelsea area in 1872.

He moved to Abingdon (then Berkshire) when he and his wife had children: Bertie, Jennie, Beatrice and Edith.

The problem is that the 1911 census is unreadable for some details - and there is no sign of him ever getting married in the UK under that name.

The 1911 census says Bertie was born in Abingdon - but I can find him anywhere either - although later children do show up.

Anybody help with this one?

He was in Chelsea up to 1891 census - but I can not find him in 1901.

He reappears in 1911 census but the handwriting is very bad.

His wife was known as Jane - although the census looks like Jennie or Jinnie.

Jennie (1903) is their second child - Beatrice was the third.

Their first child was known as Bert - the census seems to say Bertie - but can not find birst details for him.

I'm trying to find - wife's name, marriage details and birth details for first son.

Wayne

Wayne Report 6 May 2009 11:50

A family member said her name was Jane and had her death date.

BMD has Jane Want matching in listings 21 Feb 1948 - but the 1911 census does not say Jane.

I went through the Parish records as this was the only 'Want' entry I found.

I think the Edwin is a transcribe error - as the entry for everything else is the correct family.

all i can surgest is to purchase one of the daughters birth cert
this will give both parents names,at least you would have the right names for them and then maybe find the marriage,If they did marry,Maybe the wife was married before and was not free to marry.

OK - got a birth certificate for Jennie Want 1903 which shows the father as 'Edwin Albert Want' and mother as 'Jane Want formerly Bosher'.

This is the second time he has appeared as 'Edwin Albert Want' - so perhaps he was Edwin and not Edward - I'm told the family called him Bert.

When reading the 1911 census image - it is definatly Edward Want - shown in two places. The son born before their marriage seems to read 'Bertie Bosher Want' - which would match. The other two children names are correct for the family I am dealing with but perhaps it is a coincidence - but I'm told the address is the address they were at many years later.

I'm still not finding any marriage details - even for Bosher.

Anymore ideas?

Made some progress.

Bertie (Bosher) Want - was born as Albert Claude Want Bosher - to Jane Bosher in 1902.

Although not named on the birth certificate, it would seem Edward Albert Want was most likely the father.

As the father's name changes from Edwin to Edward - and by the poorly spelt names on the 1911 census - I would assume that the couple were unable to read and may not have noticed the oddities at the time.

Birth certificates show the unmarried mother in Jan 1902 and married in Aug 1903.

I feel they were more likely common-law partners - as there seems to be no trace anywhere of a wedding.

Any futher thoughts?
