No John Sawrence on the IGI born Jersey. However several Laurens and Laurence 1 Lawrence

I think weve cracked it, we always were told there was a French connection
but didnt know where.
hes born Jersey as Sawrance possibly French ?
gets married in that name and changes it to Lawrence later, all children Lawrence.

L and S are frequently mistaken. This is what would have happened on his marriage cert.
I have a death cert in 1857 transcribed as Mary Durbey Burden. I thought it was a wife of a relative with the middle name mistranscribed .
When I got the cert and looked carefully I realised she was Mercy Darbey Burden age 11 months.
It was a bonus because she was my gt grandfathers baby sister I knew nothing about.

So Sawrence will be Lawrence especially as the census confirms it
No sign of John in 1881 so he must be at sea

Is this other thread about the same man??????????

With John being ships carpenter he may not show on all census due to being away often.

Because Im not sure where hes born the only Sawrance I can find was born in Suffolk and thats what name is on his marriage cert.
which took place in Liverpool if its confusing for you its even more for me.

Did he change his name or is it Lawrence but written incorrectly on the GRO index.
I will have to get a copy of the marrige cert.

Hi this gets really confusing.

my relation is John Lawrence b c1836 Liverpool we think.
no birth cert available.
His marriage is clearly registered as John Sawrance.

But he and his wife always used the name Lawrence on census and childrens births, cant decide if this is amistake on the Gro page or what needs further investigation.
any suggestions welcome.
