Gone back to this thread because I want to say a big "thanks" to Mommylonglegs, the hero of the hour! And to show you just need one clue sometimes.

When I got John Tufft's birth cert, he just had mother Sarah Lewis on it. A non-starter you may think. But no! I went on the theory that Sarah and Mary-Ann Matthews - his aunt - were sisters.

It turns out Jabez married Mary-Ann Lewis. She had no father on marriage cert. Here we go again! I thought.

I decided to look one last time for Sarah and Mary together.. I found them in 1861. And how do I know? Because their mother was by now MrsTitley - and one of the witnesses on Mary and Jabez' marriage cert is M. Titley!!
Eureka!

And it all started with Mommylonglegs finding that census record for me.

Jenny, thanks for taking such a lot of trouble. I do think you may well have found him in 1871 and 1881, so many thanks for that. For some reason I overlooked the marriage you and Sablon found for me of William Tufft and sarah Ann Lewis, I apologise for that.
Sablon, thanks to you too - again! The death of William Tufft is intriguing and a really good suggestion. Maybe Tufft was originally John's surname -double-barrelled - rather than a middle name. I always assumed Tufft was more likely to be from his mother, but maybe not. Lots to go on there!

Still cannot connect the surname Lewis to Tofft.
I spent hours last night trying to work back and find a connection.

Can anyone else relate to my findings below. Or am I on the wrong track?

I think I have traced John's Aunty, Mary Ann/ Margaret Lewis b. 1837 Wednesbury back to the 1851 census.

But then I get confused as to why Mary Tilley is down as being Davids MIL on this census.

you need to find him with his parents in 1871 it should be under Tufft if he was born out of wedlock

if he was born out of wedlock then he would take the mothers name.this happend to me with my g/grandfather and the fathers name was a middle name
evan though they married at a later date like maybe yours

Just to say - I did also wonder about the Tufft name! Hence posting on the Tufft site (only 2 of us here!!)

The only thing is, his surname is Lewis and Tufft is given as a middle name (sorry if I was unclear about that). So I assume his father was a Lewis - but who knows!!

this is the only marriage on freebdm so he could have been born out of wedlock and tufft is the father

Heaven knows if anyone will read this!
Anyway, we have the above ancestor, born 1862 in Wolverhampton, under the above name. On the 1901 and 1911 census he is John Toft Lewis. To my surprise, the name Tufft is real! Does anyone know anything about it? I am assuming it may be his mpther's maiden name (don't have the cert yet).
