KeithInFujairah Report 29 Apr 2009 16:45

If the record is there, there are only three Janes married in Totnes that quarter, Jane Adams, 5b 345, Jane C Cryer, 5b 297, Jane Prout, 5b 353. All the records for those three seems complete.

Thank you for your overwhelmingly quick response.
In the 1881 census James H Norman b Kingswear Devon 1843 his wife was entered as Jane Norman b Brixham Devon 1845 living in East Stonehouse Plymouth. Perhaps she didnt use Adalina!!! The birth places of their children indicate they went to Canada between 1871 and 1881 another puzzle to solve!!! Happy hunting everyone

Sandii Report 29 Apr 2009 18:54

Wilma, Thank you so much for that info. It was James and Jane who went.
Plymouth was a close possible port. Alice Weymouth is a new name .I will look her up in censuses.

Wilma If you have passenger lists for Canada my grandfather Edmund Glanville Lowden went to Canada. He was born in 1871 at Meavy Devon. He went in about 1886approx. Thanks your a star.

Sandii,
not sure it's right. It says E C Lowden, no other information on passenger details other than 'own ticket to Toronto'.

Will see if I can find anything else.

Sandii Report 29 Apr 2009 20:57

Wilma, I think that could be him. ,as far as I know he was on hisown or

certainly not with any name I would recognise. His mother sent him out

there thinking he would have a better life, he was sent to a nunnery,so the

story goes , saw a nun having her hair shaved off , which frightened him and he came home again.! As for the C. could it have been a G ??

Thank you for your help.

Sandii

I haven't been able to find Adalina's death on freebmd or on ancestry ............ although I haven't looked at the Complete Index on ancestry.

I suspect that James and Jane did not marry until 1879 because Adalina was still alive .......... divorce was very difficult and expensive in those days.

Incidentally, did you notice that if that 1861 Census is correct for Adalina, she was only about 16 or 17 when she married James.
