UK RELLIES

Susan Report 5 Apr 2010 06:29

Good News, finally ! Living rellies found in the UK after 10 years searching.
My grandfather had a sister who married and had 3 children, all 3 still living in Uk. They have sent us pics of my grandfathers other 2 sisters one of whom had a daughter who is also still living. They are a great bunch of people and we have had loads of fun sharing info. Seems families have many things in common regardless of where they are brought up.
Sadly there was a youngest brother who died in 1940 and there is still one sister to find who was left at an orphanage, whom we shall find if we persist. I would like to thank any and all for all their snippets of info that helped me on my path to success.

Thanks.

aha, found the 6th living child from 1911, cert found and sent from a friend.
May b1905 belongs to me, except she is in easthampstead workhouse
and not wokingham with the rest of the family.
now another mystery to solve.

that Adelene who emmigrated to canada 1909 i do not think belongs to me, i found her in 1901 in bristol workhouse.
Thought Adelene was a rare name and never saw it on bmd before but now after searching a bit more there were actually 5-6 of then adeline, adelene, adela, so not so rare i guess after all. (although rarer than smith john or james that is for sure)

tks eve, makes me feel better that i'm not going in circles.

now when i looked closer at the CD I find the deaths at Cholsey are at the Berkshire Mental Hospital 1921 and 1940

any ideas where i can get my hands on records for those years?

tks

It works sometimes!

I spent 3 years looking for my grx3 grfather in 1841. In England of course. That's where his parents were baptised, married and buried, and where he was born before 1800, had my grx2 grfather, was in 1851 and 1861, died ... and at some point evidently married the mother of my grx2 grfather, whoever she was ...

So somebody here looked outside the box -- and found him marrying in Scotland, whence I promptly searched the 1841 *Scottish* census, and there he was. Still have no clue why or how or when, but I could have lived my life without knowing if I hadn't asked what I thought was a hopeless question here!

hi,
today i got the berkshire buriel cd in the mail.

good news/bad news i'm afraid

I find Agnes Carlison died 1944 at Wokingham.
Also an Albert Henry apr/1940 died at Cholsey, mine was born sept 1910
so this looks like a possibility.

An Annie Claridge died also Cholsey 1921 aged 41 (mine was born 1880) also looks good.

I also have a marriage for Adelene Gladys Mary to a Pieter Bimmel in 1944 Surrey S.W. that I am going to order.

The Adelene to Canada in 1909 still bothers me though and I am going to see what I can find.

guess i just had to talk to see other possibilities with new people.
tks again.

tks to all who have replied, i did have some of the information but not all.

i know for sure
married 1898
agnes 1900
david john 1901 - 1901 (as albert henry)
ada 1902
jane 1906
edward 1908
albert henry 1910

these are all mine - certificates on hand.
from 1902 to 1906 is a 4 year gap where another child could easily fit
such as May - i think i need to order that certificate next - i did not order it as she was not on the 1911 census page with the rest of her family.

adelene - i will look at the manifest page and see whats there.
ur right there is an ada annie born 1895 could be her (but not mine)

re electoral roll - can i see this list and last names too w/o sub from canada?

i think the edward john dec 1900 may be my 2nd died child
(i should have said 9 total 6 living and 3 dead in my earlier mail)
i would then have 5 living and 2 dead
(agnes was born jan 13 1900)

i also can not find a mary hannington death
her 2nd husband james hannington died portsmouth 1950 (cert on hand)

annie margaret, alice maud, florence m are not mine unfortunately.

there is a possible marriage of jean claridge to herbert humphrey in 1927 at windsor - their first dau born 1929 is named audrey? there is no jean born anywhere near so i'm hoping this should be Jane b1906. i am waiting for a reply back from Reading Records.

more later, back to work.

thanks again to all replies - it really helps to brainstorm with others looking in who are not so involved to get some perspective.

This is the household in 1901:

Albert H Claridge 28
Mary A Claridge 24
Agnes Claridge 1

-- no Adelene. But my goodness, there has to be some connection!

Don't see a birth for her or anyone like her, or anyone like her in 1901, either.

This is the closest birth -- could be another example of a young woman taking the opportunity to cast off a 19th century name and adopt a newfangled 20th century one:

Births Sep 1895
Claridge Ada Annie Hackney 1b 551

1901 census in Hackney:

Edwd Clagidge 32
Annie Clagidge 24
Edward Geo Clagidge 7
Ada Armie Clagidge 5
Albert Jas Clagidge 4

Closest I see in 1911 - not living with any other Claridge:

CLARIDGE ADA E 1894 17 Edmonton Middlesex

The names in 1901 have been corrected at Ancestry by a gr-grandchild of Edward (who is in England, we can tell by the spelling of "spelt" ;) ). Might be worth a contact through the Ancestry system to inquire.

There are 21 Claridges in Wokingham and area.

I'd send 'em all letters! ;)

Susan Report 27 Apr 2009 13:27

oh boy guys, thanks.

i should have said i did find them in 1911 and do have the page

mary mother (fletcher) b1880
albert henry, father, b1870 d1917 wwi
agnes b1900 m alexander carlson 1919 to canada - no there is no divorce found but he remarries in 1938
ada b1902
jane b1906
edward b1908 - 1997 - this is my grandfather
albert henry b1910

david john b1901 was christened and buried as albert henry in 1901 at 8 weeks old.

i have found most of the baptisms in parish records
i dont think there are other children except one born perhaps they were married as 1911 states 9 children 6 living 2 died
i know of one died and a possible 2nd and i know of 5 living
can not find the other.

the may you found is interesting, she is not on same page as the rest of them and perhaps was missed and added somewhere else? i will have to buy that page.

adelene possible other names Mary (as she was married to a catholic)
and on one record leaving uk in 1929 after a visit she is listed as gladys.

mary remarried 1917 to james hannington and living at 3 easthampstead road - this address listed on both passenger lists of agnes/adelene 1929/1930 leaving canada.

i can not reconfirm her initials as i still have not found her baptism in new brunswick, making a trip to see family this summer and hoping to find it then at the records office.

i have tried e/thing to trace marriages for the other siblings - nothing.

i'm afraid that in 1911 when they were at the workhouse for a short time that the younger children got adopted out (do not find in voyages to any other country) and their last name changed perhaps.

thanks for all the replies - i have to reread them and get back as i'm off to work at the moment - will be back on tonight.

the adelene claridge you found could definately be the child i am missing living, have to look into that more. agnes definately would have named her daughter for a missing sister i think. good find, i never saw that one but i had looked while back before i had the name adelene in my records.

edward in 1923 is the one b1908 and is my grandfather - more on him later.

back later and thank you both very much - two more clues to follow up on for may and adelene.

Good info, sablon!

This person was a Home Child -- a child immigrant to Canada from an institution in England -- and given the name, there has to be a connection!

This may be known to Susan, of course.

Do you know a middle name/initial for Adelene?

Her given name is unusual enough that it might be possible to identify her on an electoral roll by that information (and age range) alone, if she is still living.

http://www.192.com/search/index.cfm?section=advanced&view=a

There are 31 people named Adelene on the current electoral roll.

There is no death in the 1984-2005 index for an Adelene that matches that year of birth, or an Agnes Carlson born 1900.

Was Agnes widowed when she returned? She might have remarried ...

I see you've put a postem at FreeBMD for the 1919 Claridge-Carlson marriage -- good thinking!
