I have a family in my tree called ROGERS from the church Stretton area of Shropshire. An elderly, retired sea captain called Whaley Armitage lived with this family for many years up until at least the 1901 census.I'd like to know more about him.

I don't suppose we will ever know why he retired so far from the sea!!!!!
Mind you, the area of Shropshire is a place I would like to be, so why not?

Whaley Armitage 1811-1901 was the son of Whaley Armitage 1767-1865 and Eleanora Haistwell 1775-1835.
Whaley the younger was appointed Lieutenant in 1838.
He was born and baptized at Burton Court, Linton by Ross, Herefordshire.
His paternal grandfather was Robert Armitage, a merchant and mayor of Liverpool in 1738/9.
Robert's wife was Caroline Braithwaite, daughter of Colonel John Braithwaite (killed by pirates 1740).
Caroline's daughter, Priscilla married first Robert Shaw and secondly Hugh Moore. Their daughter from this 2nd marriage married William Richard Annesley, 3rd Earl of Annesley.
Young Whaley's sister, Grace was the great grandmother of the actor Robert Hardy.
