The marriage took place in 1871 and I just had to check that the 1871 census was taken before the marriage as they were both at home on the census. Big sigh of relief as the dates are fine!

The Eccleshall, actually means Ecclesall Bierlow Yorkshire, or as seen in the birth or marriage registration, Ecclesall B.

I think they did that just to confuse you further, like you say Smith.... uummm a difficult name normally to trace.......... luckily she was with her parents in 1871 and not a servant or something similar.

Smith is the worst surname in the world and it looks as though John married a Smith as well! he Derbyshire /Yorkshire area is confusing.
Eccleshall is classed as DErbyshire.

I would think the best thing would be to order the birth cert specifying father John Smith and mother Mary Ann.
