I was actually thinking that too, because l noticed a lot of Fraters come from Northumberland and Durham areas...

Debra,
I've been thinking, (very difficult for a Sunday afternoon). I have someone in my tree that, being born in the border lands, put himself down in some census records as being born in Scotland and some as Northumberland. If you haven't found a birth in Scotland, there are two around the correct time in Northumberland:-

Births Sep 1857 (96%)
Frater Robert Belford 10b 260
The district Belford spans the boundaries of the counties of Co. Durham and Northumberland
Births Jun 1858 (>99%)
Frater Robert Alnwick 10b 284
The district Alnwick is in the county of Northumberland

may not of course be him but could be worth keeping in mind?

Yes Margaret,
l got my grandmas birth cert from there to find out her mothers maiden name, but Roberts marriage isnt on there either.

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

You have to register to use the site, that doesn't cost anything but to view the records you have to buy credits and use your credits to view either a transcript (10 credits) or the original census (30 credits). The transcript will only give you the names of everyone living in the same house so you will need to view the original.
Hope the info you are looking for is on the record.

Hi Catherine,

Catherine Report 19 Apr 2009 13:47

The original 1911 census gives the number of years a couple have been married so you can at least narrow the date down. However, Robert having died before the census this info may not show, but could be worth paying to view the record anyway, just in case.

1911 - all living with Mary Ann:-

HOUSEHOLD FRATER MARY ANN F 1863 48 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding
HOUSEHOLD FRATER BARBARA F 1887 24 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding
HOUSEHOLD FRATER EDITH EMMA F 1895 16 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding
HOUSEHOLD FRATER IDA F 1901 10 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding
HOUSEHOLD FRATER JAMES M 1904 7 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding
HOUSEHOLD FRATER SARAH F 1893 18 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding
HOUSEHOLD FRATER THOMAS M 1898 13 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding

no sign of Robert, so death is likely him.

Checked it out and it looks like aged 37 not 57 so it does look like 1854, but still cant find birth in Scotland.

Hi,
Trying to trace my g grandad Robert Frater. I can only find him on 1901 census b 1854 in Scotland. He married Mary Ann Dunn from Rotherham and lived in Thornaby on Tees. I cant find trace of the wedding, his birth or even any other census before 1901. Found a death of Robert Frater in 1911 Middlesbrough which states birth around 1860. This is the only info l can find and l hope someone out there can help?
