I am trying to find my Great great grandmother's family from Pendlebury Manchester . I purchased her wedding certificate to Daniel Morgan in 1896 and found her father's name was Edward but cant find them anywhere on the cencus's . The witnesses on the certificate where Thomas Barnes & Georgina Robinson , I have found they married a year later and I have all his family but cant tie him in to Mary Ellen Morgan's family but im sure they must be related?
Can anybody please help??
Thank you
Steven

It's possible that this was Edward's death:

Deaths Dec 1879
Barnes Edward 25 Salford 8d 118

and so you would never see Mary Ellen on a census with her father.

(I'm assuming that Thomas's marriage cert shows that his father was not Edward - ?)

Births Jun 1876
Barnes Mary Ellen Salford 8d 37

?

>> Pendlebury is actually in Salford reg dist.

If the father died in 1879 wouldn't he be noted as deceased on the marriage cert.?

Re - deceased - not necessarily, from what I gather.

Apparently people tended to answer only what they were asked -- if the question was father's name, they just gave father's name!

Let's get a little more info from Steven, hopefully.

I particularly want to know whether he has confirmed that Thomas was not Mary Ellen's brother.

Sorry Eavie,
I put it with the 1891census to keep them together. Didn't see that you had also posted 1881!

thank you so much for you replies and judging from the cencus you have all kindly found , I am thinking along the lines that the Edward Barnes I am trying to find is the one that died at 25 and his wife remarried the "lodger".
Thomas Barnes was definitely not mary's brother I have traced his family back as someone else has put on this thread his father was William but it is definitely the right Thomas who signed Mary's wedding certificate I just need to find the link between them before I can add to my tree?

I have traced Thomas and his father William all the way back through the cencus and there is no sign of an Edward?
