Well what great news and what a stroke of luck - him being a Smith and all. ;)
Thanks for letting us know.

Good morning Eavie Beavie and Ricochet.

You both helped me out a couple of weeks ago with info regarding an aunt of mine ( Evelyn Florence Savage) and possible cousins that i didn't even know about. I ended up writting to several Gary Smiths in an area of London close to where he was born and this morning i have received an email from one of them. He didn't know of my existence and is as pleased as i am to be in touch.
Thanks again for pushing me in the right direction.

Yup - Ancestry, subscription site, has what FreeBMD doesn't have yet.

I was avoiding putting their names in the thread because they're living and don't know they're being talked about on the internet, you see.

You can edit your post ("Edit" link in the bottom left corner of it) to take their names out.

Good morning Evie
Am i right in pressuming that you found Jane and Gary on a site that you need to pay to view.
I have found a couple of Gary R Smiths still living in the Edmonton area on the electrol roll. I'm going to write to them and keep my fingers crossed for a positive reply from one of them
Thanks again for your time and effort

Those births are in the full 1916-2005 births index at Ancestry. FreeBMD hasn't got that period transcribed yet.

Ric & I found them by searching for all births with surname Smith and mother's surname Savage. They were the only two that matched.

I think the limit for third-party applications for birth certificates is 50 years -- after that, you have to know all sorts of things like the exact date of birth in order to get a certificate. Those births fall just outside 50 years. So if you wanted to be sure, you could get the certificates. But as you say, the match is about perfect, so you can be pretty confident they are them, I'd say.

I checked for marriages in the 1984-2005 index, for the boy. There was a whole list with the same first name and initial, so that was unfortunately kinda hopeless.

Hello Ricochet and Evie

Thanks for all the effort to help.
have been searching GR trees for a long time today and can't find any Florence or Evelyn Smith or Savage to match mine. So many Raymond Smiths i am still going through them.
Wish i could find where you found the 2 births in Edmonton. The birth place matches and the dates are a real possibility.
Smith is a rotten name and i feel so much for people who are trying to track people down
Thanks again

Ric - I saw the same births. ;)

Joan - There are people at GR with names in their trees that match those birthdates and places.

You might want to search trees for those names and birthdates, and try contacting the tree owners with people in their trees by those names born in/around London in those years.

Have sent some possible birth info by PM..........although I doubt whether it will be of much help, with the surname being Smith

Hi Rachele.
Thanks for giving me the correct name of the hospital.
I guess i was just cluching at straws when i said about contacting the hospital. Thought someone may have had access to hospital records. But thinking about it it's nearly impossible when i don't have any idea of dates.
I'll just keep searching. I have to get lucky sooner or later.

Hi Evie
I know absolutly nothing about Raymond Smith except that he was married to my aunt. He may well be alive still.
They had 2 children who must be still alive, and i thought if i was very lucky either one of them may have been on here and seem my message.
I have searched time and again but there are so many of the same name.Even if i knew where he was born might help. Anyway it is my aunt i'm really interested in. I thought i could maybe contact the hospital where she died, but it no longer exists. Never mind i will just have to go back and start searching again. I just have to be more patient.
Thanks for trying to help i really apreciate it.

Sophee - do you know when Raymond died? Nobody else does. So knowing that she died before Raymond doesn't help anybody help you!

I realized you don't have her birth cert. That was why I suggested obtaining it.

Starting in 1971, exact date of birth (rather than just age) has been shown in the GRO deaths index.

The deaths are searchable from 1984 onward at Ancestry now. Before 1984, FreeBMD is still working on the transcription.

Once the transcription is done, you will be able to search the database by *given name(s)* alone. For deaths starting in 1971, the exact date of birth of the deceased will show in the search results.

That means that if you don't know a woman's married surname, you might still be able to identify her death (or a possibility) if you find someone with the right given name(s) and the same birthdate. (Or in your case, with such a common name, you would be able to tell whether a person is your person or not.)

Since you say she died before Raymond, she was presumably Smith when she died.

And if that was before 1984, the only thing for it is

- search the images quarter by quarter during the time period in question
- wait until FreeBMD gets the transcription done and use the automated search

I'll sometimes do tedious image searching to help out, say if someone is searching for a birth parent or for some other somewhat urgent reason. I'm afraid your aunt's death doesn't meet my personal criteria. ;)

But if you do at some point reveal the info you have that no one else has -- particularly, when Raymond Smith died, so we know what date Florence died before -- someone else might want to make a try!

Joan Report 3 Apr 2009 23:13

I don't have her birth cert i'm afraid. I just have her birth as sept Q 1931.

Joan

Joan Report 3 Apr 2009 23:09

She definatly died before Raymond. That much i do know.
I also know she died young. It happened at Chase Cross Hospital.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 3 Apr 2009 23:09

If you get her birth cert so you have her exact date of birth, it will be a lot easier to identify or rule out a death in the post-1984 index.

The search can be done by given name (various variations, in her case) and date of birth alone, w/o a surname, so if she did remarry and has died since 1984 you might be able to find her. If she didn't remarry and has died since 1984, the date of birth would help distinguish her from what is probably a sea of Smiths with similar names!

Been trying to find out when my Auntie Flo died.
At birth she was registered Evelyn Florence Savage 1931.
She married Raymond Smith in 1954, in Edmonton, under the name of Florence E. Savage.
Can't find a death notice anywhere under either names. Can any one help please.
She died in Middlesex.
