Helen,
You haven't done anything wrong, the William from the 71 census is the same as the Walter in the 81 census. (See birth found by SomersetGirl)
People with middle names often changed from one name to another from census to census.
You shouldn't forget, too that boundries changed over time and towns that were in one boundry in one census may not be in the same county in the next census.

sommerset girl, ahh so it could be the same person? its hard coz some censuses say alfred was born halesowen some stafford some worcester its a nightmare. the 1911 one says halesowen, i know its the right alfred coz of the family names. the jane ann moore was my nans mum. thankyou so much for finding that birth for me, it makes sence a bit more now. thanks again helen

im trying to find out where william moore went and also walter moore, unless they are the same person. my great great grandparents were alfred moore and ellen moore nee cross. both born halesowen, but some censuses say staffordshire. in the 1871 census they are lodging with someone in riley regis and have a son called william aged 1 i think it said. in the 1881 census they are in stockton with their youngest down as walter aged 12. i havent found william in any other census, and where was walter in 1871 census as according to his age he should of been 2 yr old. also i cant find ellen or alfred before the 1871 census. can anyone shed any light as to were william and walter went. walter is in all the censusis except the 1871 one. also if anyone can find alfred or ellen before 1871 that would be terrific. kind regards helen
