On John's marriage certificate his father was Thomas Smith, a gardener. On his sister's marriage certificate the same father was Thomas Hickley, gardener!

How very strange (and lacking imagination :))

Take it mother didnt remarry?

So on the birth cert John was a Smith? - the actual marriage cert, what did he give for fathers name and occupation?

John married Alice Berry in 1892 in Sandhurst, Berkshire. Their children were Ellen, Harold, Stanley. John was born 1869 in Hampshire s/o George Hickley. When George changed his name to Thomas Smith (I wonder why!!!) the whole family were Smiths in the 1881 Census. Can you add to this?
