Does anyone think it is worth me carrying on searching for my great grandad? All i know is that his name is John Doyle born in Ireland. He married Lucy Friend in the UK in 1920. He died 1954 in UK. His was born around 1890.
What do you think?

Hi Amy,
Have found marriage of John Doyle and Lucy Friend in 1920 in Croydon.

Have found births of three children in Croydon between 1920 and 1930.
Norman born Dec quarter 1920 (2a 582), Alfred J Doyle born Sept quarter 1922 (2a 577) and Una G Doyle born Sept quarter 1930 (2a 589).
You probably have this information, but you might get more from their birth certificates.

Don't give up.

Hi Amy,

Do you have your G Grandfathers marriage cert?? If not it would be worth ordering it, this will show who his father was and his fathers occupation. This would help with any search;

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Jun 1920
-------------------------
Doyle John Friend Croydon 2a 892
Friend Lucy M Doyle Croydon 2a 892

You can order on-line at the General register, will cost £7.00 and take about 1 week.

The district is Croydon, Page No. 2a, Volume No. 892

Amy,
I have just come across your thread and noticed that you mention the possibility that John was born in Wexford.
Do you know what his profession was as I have found a John Doyle's, born Wexford born correct time, army records. He joined in 1916 and left on 03 Apr.1919.
His profession is noted as Motor Driver, and his occupation during his service was, (Light Car Driver), could this fit?
It also states that he fought in Egypt, maybe there are some family stories about this!

His full address is given as:-
Avenue House
Gorey,
Co. Wrexford
and his next of kin is given as Miss Annie Redmond, cousin of the same address.

Thanks. I had an army file emailed to me from 1914 where he joined short service for 3 yrs. May not be correct though.

I don't think you ever really give up, when you start on this journey of discovery.
I believe I have come to a terminal end with mine BUT I live in hope that one day, just one thing clicks.
However as Catherine has suggested, it can be as interesting to look at the background history. It is amazing what you can find out nowadays.
I wish you luck with the marriage certificate.

Hi again Amy

Like you I have reached my G.Grandfather,(family name) and like you he as born abroad. I know my G.G.Grandfathers name (from marriage cert), but can find no more info. This is where I have reached my brick wall.
However within this line I've researched why my GGGrandfather could be in this specific corner of the world (1850's South America), the formation of the Salvation Army and it's role in the 1880's-1920's. I've also learnt a bit about health in this era too, outbreaks of Smallpox/typhoid around London. It sounds boring but it has helped me to understand my ancestor a bit more.
Through various sites I have found cousins and we pool our info.
On my G.Grandmothers side, I have reached my 5xG Grandfather and live in hope that I will be able to move further back with this one.

Best of luck and I hope that the marriage cert, helps you move on another generation
